... we all know about those mod-chips that they install on consoles (xbox's, ps2's, etc...)

Im curious, are you for or against all that modding?

cheers!

It depends, in my experience most mods exist to play pirated games that I am against. If it is for something random then I don't really mind.

Hack away - pirated games are wrong but I enjoy playing a variety of games over a variety of machines.

Hack allows my Xbox to show movies etc which is a boon..

When Bill Gates found out about the modded Xboxes he got his done. Many of the great features found on hacked Xboxes are now in the Xbox 360. Without mod chips this wouldn't have happened! :D

MODDING allows these consoles to achive huge sales in poor countires....even if modding lets pirated games run on a console, dosnt huge sales help the company afterall?!

Not really. At start of production companies lose money on consoles, and even later on, the companies are supported more by game sales then console sales.

sure, i know that the companies lose money at the start..but hay! there comes a time when the production becomes cheap an the console starts earning on its own, not that i deny the fact that software sales support the companies..

I know, but being games-ignorant, I'm asking like specific mods, like are you talking about more memory, or what?

Mod chips, mostly those that lets you play DVD-9's in a ps2 or xbox, or those that lets you play mp3 CD's.

Very early mods allowed the user to play copied games on their console, was very common for Playstation.

8 .8 gb dvd's ... mostly all new writers burn them fine except media is kind of hard to come by at very cheap rates

I bought my used xbox in mind to mod it.
I upgraded the DVD drive, installed a more quiet fan and a 250 gig hard drive.

I can play import games or "backups" from disc or off the hard drive with shorter load times.
I can play Super NES, Genesis, PSX, NES and MAME.
With Xbox Media Center, I get another DVD player, streaming radio, RSS and weather reports, and I can watch movies or tv shows I downloaded.

So exactly why would anyone be against this?

DarkElf

@Carcomptoy...dude..of all the ppl i never thought that U'd ask THAT, neways, modding is illeagle..period, it allows coppied games(downloaded an then slapped on to a dvd-r, or cd-r) to work on a modded console, whatsoever protection metod implemented in the hardware against copy protection is rendered uselless...
all in all u can buy dirt cheap (pirated) games an play em to your hearts content..:D

oh HAHA Well I mean hardware mods I guess. Like with the memory increase and such...technically, since you bought the thing, shouldn't you be able to do whatever you want with it?

I understand the software piracy, but what I was referring more to I guess was the hardware aspect:o

Got it off ebay. Samsung 616t I think. Premodded so the power connector matches. $70 though, but since my old one was broken, might as well get the nice replacement.

So this means that all you guys dont use or dont have a single pirated game at all? I admit that I have 2 "non-original" games here with me, given by a friend - but since I haven't had my ps2 modified yet, I cant play them. Im still thinking if I should have it done - I think it's nice to have a choice, than to be stuck to playing just one format.

FOR! Think about it, games cost soo little! I have a modded PS2, and games cost me RM5 (5 Malaysian Ringgit, do the math if u wana know the US price). I know its not good and bla bla, but I have a good argument to back me up! Over here in Malaysia, the PS2 systems are NTSC/J, which means only Japanese games work. The problem is, I dont speak or understand Japanese, and the other 99.9% of the population here dont as well, so not modding my PS2 will force me to get Japanese games (I have 2 actually, GT3 and Tekken Tag). And games range from RM100+ to RM200+, which is pretty expensive. I've got no choice for my PSP, thats why I only have 5 games! And the PSP is region free, so games sold are NTSC/UC, which is in English! Its a good thing the PS3 is region free as well, so that more English games will be sold, and will promote the purchase of original games. Right now I have like 100+ games for my PS2, coz its cheap getting the pirated ones. But once I get a PS3, its no more piracy for me if we get English games here.

i own a cool 100+ pirated game disks for the ps2.....
AND u can even get PSP games onto your memorystick for a lot less....assuming that u are running firmware 1.5 on it...

I hate things like this.

You see if they dropped the price a bit, just about everyone would buy legit. But they can't drop the price because so many people are buying pirated. But I guess it's the way of the world. But in future with aint-pirating being in-bulit more with hardware and less with software pirating will get more difficult.........but it's a case of if prices of games then drop at all, but knowing greedy companies I doubt it.

Yeah it's really sad but what choice do third-world countries have? I mean, when inflation is rampant, what would you do when you want games but yet an original authentic game is ten times the price of a pirated one? Like with my relatives in the Philippines...most of their movies are the pirated ones bought from the sidewalks. I think their only genuine ones are the ones we gave them:(

Not only that, if there were no pirated stuff, there would be no IT revolution in APAC and the world will be stuck with windows 95 or all the gadgets we have now will be a lot more pricey:D Think that pirated s/w became a revolutionary educ tool for the poor countries which the first world countries takes advantage of lower labor costs...

" soon windows will be in EVERY home in the world were there is a computer", this is what b.Gates said way back when win95 was released..., guess he knew that he would achive this bt piracy...other wise it wouldnt have had been possible. :D

Getting back to topic. I am not against mods, they get me the features which the hardware is capable of but the manufacturers did not include.
