I was hoping for a walkman version of the k790 as it has that lovely 3.2mp cybershot. However, i like the walkman software on these phones as they make listening to music much better than on phones like the k750i. I have the w800 and am happy with it but now i dont see wat is a fit upgrade, the k790 or this w850.
Does anybody know if the k790 has a music player like the walkman ones or is it basic track by track organization?
deecrummey asked this in another thread but I thought I'd throw it out there - does anyone know how functional the music app on the K800i is compared to one of the Walkman phones? I'd be annoyed to find it crippled for the sake of promoting the Walkman brand...
It isn't 'crippled' per se, but it isn't as fully featured as on the Walkman handsets. You don't get as much organization features, but if all you want is a simple player, you will be fine.

According to Mobile-Review:
The media player obtained support for AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ files, besides the standard MP3. In our sample the interface copied Sony Ericsson W800i, but it is to be repainted from orange into black with Walkman logo permanently removed. The player is rather good, but number of additional functions as compared to Sony Ericsson W950i seems to be quite limited.
The link to the page is given below:

Therefore, I do not think there will be any difference with the music player of K790/800 from the walkman phones, and will support organizing songs by music, artists, tracks etc.

or 790 at that...
Eldar's handset is pre-production. The pre-production models actually run the Walkman app from the W series handsets. The release version of the phone will have a much more cut down music player, without options like an EQ and such. As for the organization, I don't know yet.

bit of a dissapointment if that is the case, if so il just go for the W850 unless a better handset has been released. The w850 is probably not that much of an upgrade from the w800 really so i dunno, any ideas?? Nokia N80?
One key element missing from first series Walkmans and other SE players is the ability to select by ALBUM. It's rather frustrating if you have a compilation album like a dance CD or film soundtrack as you select the artist, see the album title but only have one track by them (and the others are all listed seperately). Couldn't believe it when I first got hold of a Walkman phone.
It would be good if the K800 is based on a cut down version of the Walkman 2.0 series but I won't hold my breathe!

Thats a good point... The walkman player should also have an album selection... As an example, in India there are movie albums that come out and if someone just wants to add the album in their phone then it will not be sorted in the walkman menu as it should be...

i wouldnt imagine the music player on the K800/K790 would be too much better then the K750. it will be a tad bit better but it will definetly not have walkman features.

From the above pics taken from gsmarena review of K800, its clear that the Music player of K800 is better than K750 and equal to W800... The only thing lacking is Mega Bass in the equilizer...

its better as in you got more choices on what you can do while you're in the music player but the sound quality is not immensly better. just a tad bit better.

On the GSM Arena review pics there are EQ for the K800i. Maybe it's just like the M600, where they give you the EQ choices, but you can't adjust the EQ itself??? Anyways, if it's like the sound quality of the K750i. I think it's good enough.

Thank the gods for that, mega bass is lousy. Its only any good for people who don't like tuneful music.
The walkman feature is flawed anyways. It doesn't correctly sequence music - it sorts by track name or date, it doesn't have an option to sort by track number. It ignores the ID tags. Stupid. Irritating. The only way to correctly sequence tracks is to use playlists - may as well have a K750 instead of a W800 on that count.

My new K800 definately does not have mega-bass in the equalizer options, but the music player otherwise is more or less the exact same as the one in the W800/900i just without the branding.

the difference is no mega-bass or now playing list (only shows the current track, no ability to see the full album/playlist being played)
i know its a bit off topic but does anybody know of a java audio player developed for se handsets with more functionality than the very limited options on current models?

i've just made the switch from w800 to k800, and there's two differences;
*no mega-bass (crap anyway imo)
*no ability to view the current playing album/playlist (shown by pressing the stick up or down in w800:BangHead: )

The only other Java mp3 player that I know of is the one that shipped with the Moto E398/V360 (and other motos, I guess). Its not a very good player really, but I think it has more options that the walkman player.
By far and away the best is on S60 though - OggPlay. Beats iTunes, for me at least.

k800 has no walkman features. no mega pass. but buy a hpm70 for it and it should be good enough as a mp3 player as logn as you aint an audiophile like me cause i tend to get picky if i dont get enough bass.

1. Audiophiles do not like megabass. Bass heads like megabass. The two types of people are very different.
2. Audiophiles will not like the HPM70 - its got no transparency, lumpy bass, in fact they are just cheap and nasty headphones all round.
3. K800 does have walkman features, but they just aren't branded as such. The player is pretty much the same as in the W800,etc.
What sort of audio system do you use at home to count yourself as an audiophile? I'm running some classic kit - Linn Sondek, Mission amps, Cyrus Loudspeakers, Stax Lambda pro electrostatic headphones ..... that would only set you back about £5k nowadays, its pretty much low end audiophile :D

actually, i meant the hpm70 for its 3.5mm jack. i got my own earphoens for them that i paid alot for to attach to it :).
and since you watn to be a critic as to what defines an audiophile, and audiophile isnt defined by their HOME system, just to the fact that they are extremely picky as to the way they listen to their music. im sure my shures, etymotics will vouch for that :).

have you owned both k800 and w800?

Nope, haven't owned a k800, but I know plenty of people with them, and the features are practically identical.
Shaheen - just using Sures/Etymotics does not make you an audiophile. Sure, being picky about your sound is part of it, but no true audiophile would ever use megabass. Heck, to be honest no true audiophile would even use an equaliser - if you've got a good enough system, you won't really need it.
please excuse me though - I'm having an extremely cruddy day, so I've been pretty tetchy since I first got into work. I need to get out of the office for a while.
I like headphones. They let me listen to my music. :)
