hi there,

what's the best laptop that you can buy without going over 1K? ($)

what brand would you recommend?

.... only requirement is that it should have at least a 40GB drive, a DVD drive, at least 1 USB port, and a 10" LCD (so anything above that is cool).

cheers!

yup... thanks for the link, been lookin at them sites, these past few days.

Im tempted to get a notebook with a dual-core... but then there's the heat issue, which is a pain to have. Even the latest macbook has this. So maybe I'll go for a centrino instead... still mulling it over.

cheers!

Well if you multi-task and use some processing heavy applications not getting a dual core would be a sacrifice. But if your laptop was mainly for Internet/E-mail/Office applications etc. then it wouldn't be noticable whether u had a dual core or not.

What's the heat issue?

Most Dual Core processors run a fair amount hotter than single core processors I think.

So is it not recommended unless you really need the power?

found some nice laptop specs and price from Toshiba.

but Im not that familiar with that brand... is it any good?

the Acer Ferrari seems nice... but it's over 1K, as with most Dell models... guess it's back to more searching.

... oh incidentally, is a Firewire port really useful? Or should one just get a USB-II port instead?

cheers!

USB 2 should suffice, one and only thing in my household that is firewire is the cable for my dad's camcorder, most things are USB either 1 or 2. Firewire never really took off so unless you already have any gadgets you already use and find essential and can't get USB cables for, firewire would be a bit pointless. (Firewire probably will never take off well seing as the new firewire 800 isn't backward compatible and USB is already dominant).

So is it not recommended unless you really need the power?
Well it'd be pointless and a waste of money, that's looking at laptops though. Seeing as I use my PC for games I have a dual core in my desktop, but I have no real heat issues as desktops are much easier to have air flowing through and keep cool.

Very good, actually. The ThinkPad branded ones at least. Not very flashy, but good on specs and battery life.

Lenovo (not ThinkPad) are actually quite good for the price. You get similar support and software as the regular ThinkPad, although the build quality is less.

There are some Acer notebooks that are identical to Lenovo except the build quality is even worse.

I dont like IBM laptops, not that they're crap - of course not. What I dont like is that little red pointer in the middle of the keypad. Why cant they just make a touchpad like the other laptop makers out there?
