Gigabyte, the Chinese PC and parts manufacturer, decided to expand into the smartphone market with the g-Smart i. Instead of going through all that pesky "product development", ol' Gigster just decided to clone a Nokia 6270.

Running Windows Mobile 5, the g-Smart i has a whole mess of features the Nokia does not:

2.1-megapixel camera, MiniSD card slot, 2.4-inch TFT touch screen display, FM tuner, GPS navigation system (optional), TV tuner (optional), and support for a host of audio/video files (MP3/MPEG-4/3GPP/WMV).

Goes on sale for $262 USD.

Now why is it that other smaller companies can put things like touch screens and tv tuners into a phone that is almost the same as the mainstream one and charge half the price. Nokia amoungst many others really miss the boat with things like that. To have a 6270/6280 with touchscreen and tv tuner would pretty much have made it a much better phone then it already is (to a point). I am really thingk hard about getting one of the generic bands for a standby phone to my N70 as long as I can find one with UMTS.

Great price indeed!

So what are the full set of features? Will it be identical to the 6280 with those as extra features?

hehhe an i though pakistan was the only one gettin these phones....just bought ANOThHER 6270 clone today...it goes by the name of "Mp4-e", touch screen,
1.3 mp camera (albite not good at all), mini sd slot(128 mb card included),32 mb internal mem, pethatic orange and silver color, wma,mp3.real audio, 3gp, mpeg4,
divx, avi(!!!) support...can go thru word documents....
excle and acrobat dosnt seem to be supported, since there is no box or user manual for th cellphone, so ill never know.

they even carry clones of N8800(near perfect), k750 and w800...all going by the same name....

the video playback is awsome.

an it costed me PK Rs. 9700, thats roughly 150 US$.

Hmm, but the g-Smart has been available for quite a while already, plus it's a Windows Mobile phone, and it's pretty cheap too, not to mention Gigabyte isn't a small time clone manufacturer.

Talking about clones, there are clones of the N73 already. At first I thought it was a display model, but it's a real phone made by one of those Korean clone makers.

Yeah there are soo many of these clone companies.. i saw a smartphone called the Iteq "bond" which has a 1.3Mp cam, touchscreen and miniSD slot and is a slider.. its like a slightly bloated d600!
