View Full Version : Could someone explain what "GEN:" means?

Everytime someone asks about an unlock code, or unlocking some specific phone, they invariably get told to either read the DCT4 Unlock Resources thread, or to visit http://unlock.nokiafree.org/ and do it themselves because it's so easy, or that they haven't spent enough time with a search engine.
Well I've done all those things, and NOWHERE that I'm able to see is there any explanation of how to make the selection from the drop-down box at http://unlock.nokiafree.org/ asking you to choose "GEN:".
If anyone asks to have this explained to them, as they have once or twice, which is reasonable since one can conclude that they can't proceed until they have some reason to choose one of the settings, they never get a response. Occasionally a reference is made like "I just left it like it was and it worked," which to any rational person is not a reasonable course of action.
So can someone explain to me what "GEN:" is, and why anyone would choose any of the settings over any of the others? "I just left it alone and it worked" is not an answer.
Thanks, accumulatorx

Why isn't "I just left it like it was and it worked" not a reasonable course of action? I have ALWAYS left the "GEN" option alone, sticking to changing the network and model number only.
Have you tried the results not having changed that?

It's not a reasonable course of action because I'm assuming that if it didn't really need to be there it wouldn't be there, at least in some situations.
This is especially so since you only get five tries. If I had all the chances in the world, sure, no problem. If I happen to have the phone that doesn't work with the default setting, I'm stuck.
Also I only get two tries too, not five, because I have a used phone and the previous owner tried three apparently. And you get 7 codes displayed and have no reason to choose one of those over another, and it appears that usually only some work. So I'd like to try to cut down my chances of getting a wrong code if possible.
Also, I have a Nokia locked to Orange in the UK, and I read that they are different than most providers in a number of ways (two locks of some sort used instead of only one, that kind of thing). One posting in another forum said to choose "GEN: original" in some cases for Orange, but the post was not thorough. Others say the "GEN" to use depends on software revision and phone manufacture date, and I can't find out to how to derive GEN from these things.
I looked at using the original exe DCT4NCK by Jozso and that has a parameter, and I also have no idea what that is, though I get the impression it is the same as "GEN."
So all this adds up to a reasonable supposition that it's a bad idea not to have a specific course of action, if possible.
SO does anyone know what it means and how to figure out which one they have?
By the way, I have a Nokia 6100.
Thanks, accumulator

When you get the results after leaving the GEN box alone, it is advised to try the seventh code first (the one ending with +7#), then proceeding to the first one (the one ending with +1#) if that in some rare case should not work.
I'm sorry I can't offer you a more technical or thorough explanation, but in all honesty, leaving the GEN box alone has served me well over the past years, so I haven't really worried myself over it...I'm thinking you would do well to do likewise, for your sanity and blood-pressure.
