Nokia Introduces the First EDGE-Capable Smartphone for the
Americas Market

-Nokia 6620 Imaging Phone Combines the Productivity of a Business Tool With

The Fun of a Multimedia Device-

NEW YORK, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Surrounded by the bright lights and fast pace of Times Square in New York, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today unveiled the new Nokia 6620 imaging phone, the first smartphone for the Americas market optimized for use on new high-speed EDGE networks. The Nokia 6620 imaging phone employs a 65,000 color TFT screen for viewing still images and video clips captured by the integrated VGA camera and real-time video streaming over the EDGE network using the built-in RealOne mobile player. While taking pictures, users have the ability to use the 2X digital zoom and a self-timer feature to allow everyone to be included in the fun, while the extended memory enables the saving of hundreds or even thousands of images. The powerful Symbian OS-based Series 60 platform allows for the creation of richer applications including business and productivity tools such as mobile e-mail, over-the-air synchronization of PDA data, a fully integrated Internet browser (HTML 4.01, XHTML/CSS and WML), and a wide selection of third-party applications. The Nokia 6620 imaging phone (GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900/1800 MHz) is expected to be available during the second quarter of 2004.

850Mhz??? You mean that Cingular will finally have a worthy contender?......Now, only if I can wait 5 more months to upgrade my outdated 7160!!.

I'm assuming that the 6620 will be for the 850 spectrums of Cingular and AT&T. The 6600 will bre released to T-Mobile US from what I've heard. But the fact that the 6620 has EDGE makes it a little better than the 6600. I also like the fact that it will have Pop-Port and the color is a bit more feminine.

Wow i was shocked to see it, i reckon it looks alot more better, sick of dark dull colours, i think i might wait for this one if it hopefully comes out here in OZ. Just a slight upgrade from the old 6600 haha.

I hope to see T-Mobile go with the 6620, because I would take that as a sign that their own EDGE network was almost ready.

I am just saying I *hope*...not that this is based in fact or anything. But it would be a good indicator.

So Michael, did you talk to the Nokia guys/gals and if so, did you manage to squeze out anything else interesting?

What I learned is in the story. The faster CPU, for example, is not in the press release. That was learned from talking to one of the product managers.

Sorry, was not clear, I meant if you heard any rumours on a new Communicator or anything like that?

Michael

Ah, yes.

But I don't want to spill those yet....

But needless to say, it is indeed coming. I just can't say, as it was told to me off the record.

Will phone support proper MMS?

Heck will nokia ever support proper MMS? ie. the ability to add .mid and .wav to an MMS?

Dear Michael,
thanks very much for the review,
but one thing wasn't very clear,
you mentioned pop-port and mp3 player
in the specifications
does that mean the 6620 has a stereo audio chipset now?

thanks

The ability to send MIDIs in MMS message, or in any other way, is the issue with copyright. For example with 6230 you can send MIDIs in MMS since there's proper DRM in place.

yep i figured so, cos the hardware of 6620 is going to be somewhat different from 6600.

hopefully the 6620 will set a precedence for the next nokia symbian smartphone. My best bet is a 3G Series 60/Symbian 7 smartphone which includes eveything of 6620 plus video call function. nokia may need to introduce such a model soon since video call is a vital feature of 3G networks.

Did they give a better estimate of launch date other than "2nd quarter"?

If they had, we would have put that in the story.

Check this link out. It's CNet first take of the 6620. I guess it's not as good as Michael's, but surely gives an idea of the price. Read on.

Just wondering, has anyone heard anything about a 6620 900/1800/1900MHz version for use worldwide? Or any sort of upgraded 6600 with the same sort of features as the 6620??

Sounds like a really great phone.

As long as AT&T Wireless, or whichever provider carries it, can offer significant subsidies--we're talking a final price tag closer to $250--the 6620 should be a popular model with mobile professionals. They are saying that IF it gets big subsidies to bring it around $250, THEN it could be very popular.

As far as I know, the 6620 is only for the American Market. Haven't heard any rumors of upcoming 6600 upgrades...

Sorry, My bad... But, it quotes Nokia saying that it'll retail below the 400 dollars... SIM-Free, I guess. . So? Isn't that at least a really vague, estimated indication of the price?..... But an indication, at last...

But an indication, at last... On the contrary, my bad. I read it twice and didn't see the $400 reference either time.

Oops.

I would call that a reasonable indication of price....
