While Motorola's stylish new smartphone is never to be released in the US, the manufacturer brought one to CTIA Wireless this year, and we had a little hands on time to shoot some pictures for everyone.
The Linux-powered Motorola MING (formally known as the A1200) sports an interesting design, with a translucent protective cover adorning the front of the handset. Particularly interesting is the way Motorola has...

Just wanted to make a correction to the Snapshot by Brad on the Home page concerning the A1200 aka MING.
The handwriting recognition works in English. It actually works very well in English. It also comes with Opera and you can check your email with the email app. although I have yet to figure out how to store messages to the memory card. It comes with a 512k mini-SD card and SD adapter so you can plug it into your computer and transfer files. You can also select to have the card show up on the desktop when you plug in the USB charger to your computer. Although this has resulted in crashing my Mac every single time. You can also read pdf. and word/excel files but you cannot edit them.
One of the coolest things is that you can scan business cards into the phone and OCR software does a "fair" job of transferring the info to your contacts. Although if someone gives you a complicated card with a bunch of graphics and hoopla on it fuggedabowdit.
I've had the phone about 2 weeks and love it. The wow factor is off the scale. And, while I'm hyper protective about my phone, there is not one scratch on the cover.
Thanks for that, I didn't see the English recognition when we played with it. I have changed the story.
In future though, if you would like to comment on stories, you can contact the author by clicking our name at the top of the story.

Brad,
I didn't mean any bad on you. It's a complicated phone and it took me literally days to figure everything out. So you're not expected to know everything after a few minutes.
Rock on.

Don't worry, no offence taken. I am happy to admit when I get something wrong.
You rock on too.

Lol looks like a dark coloured A780 just a wee bit smaller and minus the flimsy transparent screen...
Funny cos in England if something "mings" it is ugly - and this is indeed an ugly device..

Sorry, I'm not writing the review, just editing it. Jin is going to be doing it, but he hasn't received the handset yet. I'll let you know when he gets it, and what his initial impressions are.

I've seen someone use this mobile in Hk before
Its not a popular smartphone .Runs using Linux I think
people rather use o2 atom or Dopod..

If the name Moto Ming makes it to the UK, its going to be an even bigger PR disaster than the Nintendo Wii. Seriously, Motorola can kiss all their hard earned brand image goodbye if this makes it to the UK...

hi, does anyone know if motorola intend to update/ upgrade the motorola ming? am thinking of getting a new phone, and although the ming looks really good, its spec almost looks ancient compared to the likes of nokia (N95) et al, eg: 3+ MP camera, 2 GB+ memory cards and other features have now become standard on other premium phones, and once again i just feel motorola is behind the curve - more style than substance...

There has been some rumours floating around about a Razr based replacement for the A1200, but who knows.
