:D What can you say about that?

maybe ... or maybe not.

what makes it the "best"? Best in sales? Best in advertising and marketing? Best in its product range? Best in build quality? Best in product support and enhancements?

nokia has been consistent in its design philosophy - producing phones that range from the very simple to the very feature-laden types. Judging from the way they stay at number 1 thru these past years - I think this type of strategy worked, and is still working for them today. All they need to do now is to keep that up, change and innovate, as the markets and technology changes too.

cheers!

Well, for sure it's certainly the most successful, but that doesn't really say much considering it's still a baby of a market compared to other industries...

Subjectively, I think it is...but obviously that's subjective and unique to each person

I like Nokia phones, but I prefer Motorola.

Indeed - the answer is undeniably YES.

Haha - kidding.

Best mobile manufacturer in terms of what?

Sales?
Design?
Innovation?
Practicality?
Value?
Quality?
ETC ETC?

As a personal preference, for me, yes Nokia is the most suitable manufacturer, ergo the best manufacturer of all time - for me.

My dad says that like motorola was number 1 before? Was that true? For me, nokia has always been number 1 - at least like since the time when I started getting interested in cell phones.

no its not for most of the latter part of the 90s i was happily using motos and ericssons. Nokia has durable good fones but as of late i am questioning their wisdom. Phones are not on time.. when they are the quality and finish is slipshod. It takes more than a few firmwares to get a stable phone. They have not done enough on front of developing battery life. yes i know the phones have gotten very complicated with bt +super colour screens etc as of late.. but that is still no excuse not to work on batt life problems.

Its only now that they are upgrading the procs on their fones and moving to li-polymer on the e-series ( the proc upgrade on eseries as of now is unconfirmed look for the article on e61 elsewhere on the forum)

Motorola was number one for the longest time...until they started getting complacent and stuff...they obviously started the industry with the DynaTac and then they got a boost with the StarTACs

well, ericsson was so big before and now it has been eaten up by sony... moto phones is just a small division in the giant motorolla electronics industry... siemens is also a huge company... so is panasonic, so is samsung and LG... all of which can afford that their cellphone division is not doing well, or pump up sooo much money for marketing campaig for it... nokia does not have that luxury, it is their cellphones or bust! so i gues nokia is doing just fine...

Wether Nokia is the best phone manufacturer is up to personal opinion, but they have definitely been the most consistent manufacturer and i guess its due to their conventionality. Whats good is that they are also versatile, and thus the reason that when they realised that they where loosing market share, they quickly adapted and started producing clamshells and sliders.

well, as you can see that we are talking about mobile, then it would be that i am talking about ericsson's mobile division and not the entire company...

In some countries the work "Nokia" is almost synonymous with "mobile phone". In terms of market reach, Nokia is clearly the number one with an impressive range of phones from the very cheap, basic and robust ones like the Nokia 1100 (the world's best-selling phone), up to things like the Nokia N-Series and Communicators.

The word "best" is subjective. Back in about 2003-2004 most Nokia handsets were way behind the competition in terms of features. It took a long time for Nokia to come out with phones that can hold their own against Sony Ericsson and Samsung, for example.

Competition means that mobile phone manufacturer's influences changes over time. After a dip in 2003-4, Nokia is certainly one of the most influential. Sony Ericsson got off to an awful start in 2001-2 but with devices like the Walkman, Cybershot and Symbian/UIQ phones is extremely influential at the moment.

If you look at the other big players, Samsung is in a slow decline, primarily because of a muddled range and poor marketing (and their high rate of cancelled handsets, although the phones themselves are pretty good). Motorola.. well.. look past the veneer of success that the RAZR gives and you can see that Motorola are in a terrible state - think about the ROKR E1, the A1010, E1120, E1060, MPx range, high profile handsets that are either horribly late, cancelled or were disasters when launched.

In a couple of years time, it could all change. The fortunes of mobile manufacturers go up and down. LG is one to watch, as is VK Mobile and possibly even Grundig Mobile. Some of the manufacturers we know today might go the way of Philips, Panasonic or Sendo. Who knows?

@Dynamoo - I doubt it about Grundig, considering all they do is re-brand other manufacturers.

Nokia don't just make handsets

(Taken from wikipedia)

Nokia is best known today for its leading range of mobile phones. Nokia also produces mobile phone infrastructure and other telecommunications equipment for applications such as traditional voice telephony, ISDN, broadband access, professional mobile radio, voice over IP, wireless LAN, a line of digital terrestrial television receivers and satellite receivers. Nokia provides mobile communication equipment for every major market and protocol, including GSM, CDMA, and WCDMA (UMTS).
