Panasonic to roll out Blu-ray player in September
By Sue Zeidler Wed Mar 29, 4:06 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Panasonic said on Tuesday it will start selling a Blu-ray high-definition disc player in September for under $1,500 and sees up to 5 million of these new DVD players sold industry-wide in their first year.

"We think adoption will be strong, based on broad support. For the first 12 months, we expect 4 million to 5 million units to be sold beginning in May and across all platforms, including standalones, computers and gaming systems," said Reid Sullivan, vice president merchandising, Panasonic's entertainment group.

Sullivan said Panasonic sees no need to develop a player to support both Blu-ray and the rival format known as HD DVD, despite a raging war between the two standards and a move to make a dual player for both formats by LG Electronics Inc. (066570.K).

"Unfortunately, there is some confusion between the two but based on the wide support for Blu-ray in the industry, we expect the (growth) curve to be quite steep. We recognize that its best to have one format," said Sullivan.

The arrival of Panasonic's Blu-ray player will coincide around the debut of its new 103-inch flat screen TV, estimated by Panasonic to cost several times more than the $10,000 price of its 65-inch Plasma TV.

Panasonic is a division of Panasonic Corp. of North America, the principal North American subsidiary of Matsu****a Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (6252.T)

First Blu-ray player ships

The high definition (HD) video format war has begun. Well, in the United States, at least.

The Samsung BD-P1000 has been shipped to retailers there and will be the first Blu-ray video player in the market when it goes on sale on June 25 – timed to coincide with the release of several movie titles in the high-definition Blu-ray disc format.

The player supports true high-definition 1080p output (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) via HDMI output connectors. However, it is also backward compatible with existing DVD video, applying up-sampling techniques that optimise standard definition DVDs for display on high-definition televisions (HDTV).

Apart from Blu-ray media and off-the-shelf DVD videos and audio CDs, the BD-P1000 will also read from a variety of recordable DVD formats including DVD-RAM, DVD±R and DVD±RW.

Additionally, Samsung has included a 10-in-2 memory card reader which allows it to display JPEG photos taken with digital cameras in high resolution on a HDTV.

The Samsung BD-P1000 is set to hit the US market for US$999.99 (RM3,650). So far, there’s no word if this player or a localised version will be launched in Malaysia this year.

This marks the beginning of the high-definition video format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD.

These two incompatible formats promise to bring superior video quality to the masses – with far better resolution than the now ubiquitous DVD video format – and is reminiscent of the competition between the VHS and Betamax video cassette formats of the 1980s.

Earlier this year, Toshiba beat the Blu-ray camp to the market by launching the world’s first HD DVD video players (the HD-XA1 and HD-A1).

There are currently less than 30 HD DVD titles available in the US market and roughly 50 more due to be released by the end of 2006. In contrast, Samsung claims that more than 200 titles will be available on Blu-ray by then.
