I like the SL55 better than the S55 except for the lack of Bluetooth.

My cousin has one, overall it is very nice, but the display and keys are horrid.

How much did you guys get the SL55 for?

The display is run of the mill. Not the best 4k color display I have seen, to be sure.
But I liked the keypad quite a lot, actually.

the sl keypad is cool i reckon. the display is better under sv9

The keypad looks nice, but I found the buttons to have horrible tactility. The alphanumerical keys have too much depth, while the softkeys and 4-way scroll key are too stiff.

suppose it all comes down to taste. i like the positive, rubber quality of the keys.

I was a huge SL45 fan and I have to say the SL55 is a big disappointment to me.
Poor quality display, small memory (1.6 v 32 MB on the SL45) and incredibly slow opening Java apps..
Siemens seem to be way behind SonyEricsson and Nokia.

The SL55 is horrid! I got to test one at work before it came out and the first thing that went wrong was after 2 hours when the slide broke and you couldn't open it any more. We had to force it open and re-seat the clips that hold it together!
The buttons feel awful for anyone with large hands and the whole thing in general comes across as cheap and nasty! (personal opinion obviously, but one that is shared by pretty much everyone here at work)
The display is disgusting, the colours are washed out and bland, and the graphics are 3rd rate.
Siemens are a very long way behind nokia and SE but hopefully they can't get much worse than this one!

Oh yes, I almost forgot the radio performance of the phone is dismal too.
Michael

I had no such problems.
The 1900Mhz radio reception was very good.
The buttons were comfortable for me, and my hands are reasonably large (I'm 6'4"/194cm).
I could see how the slider mechanism could be a potential weak spot, just as it can be with any moving part, but I had no problems and saw no sign of impending problems.

....and its not as though nokia and ericsson dont have quality problems with their phones either?!
I think all the newer style phones (ie colour/java etc) seem to have a lot of qualtiy realted issues. probably just because they are more complicated than the old mono ones. also, the companies are probably trying to cut back on costs?

I am interested in the SL55 & maybe S55.
Techically SL55 seems backwards compared to S55.
Is the only technical difference between the two is SL55 has less battery life?
And how long has S55 been out for?
Michael

SL55 has a 4k color screen and is smaller/lighter.
S55 has Bluetooth.
S55 has been out for quite a while now. 10, 11 months?

Even though the SL55 is not as good as S55, i think i will get the SL55. I dont think i will change fone again until the contract ends. So I would be looking for something that would still look good in 2yrs time.
But no Bluetooth??? That totally sux!
Bluetooth hands-free seems to be become the standard.
Form over function wins for me.
SL55 it is.

I recently purchased the SL55, and have had some problems with it. The battery life is no more than two days, and I am only a light user.
The phone is slow when turning on, switching off, and searching menus. Games take about two minutes to load.
Even the pro-slide noise doesn't actually sound during 'sliding', but about five seconds later!
Only minor problems, but have irked me considerably, and I have only had the phone for a week.

These are exactly the sort of problems that made me switch to a Nokia 7250i after less than 2 weeks.

Yah, i heard the fone is quite slow when asking it to do things.
Im testing my friend's S55 for a few weeks. I find that is a bit slow also. But i wait for it.
But the SL55 is so nice to look at.
Can someone convince me of a better fone that is not so common?
I dont want a fone which a lot of people have.
No Nokia plz.

ive not had all the problem that alexandra17 has had. I swapped to the SL from an s55 cause i couldnt stand the keys on the S. i find that the sl is generally better. the call quality is very good on mine. better than the s55, my t68 and my partners nk

I'm on my fourth SL5X and not due to any problems. I love the phone for it's uniqueness and sound quality. The RF is also above average. I've owned over 20 different phones in the last two years and this is one of my favourates. I've not had any problems with any of the SL5X's in terms of f/w or h/w.

I have had the SL55 for about a week now.
HK model.
Very happy with it. Does what i need it to do.
The buttons are much easier to press than S55.
(S55 buttons were in a strange position)
Only complaint is that the screen quality is quite low and the defualt ringtones are quite bad.
Hence, i am downloading the data-suite now (the cd is being posted from hk) to upgrade the firmware, find new ringtones and find new wallpaper.
I can transfer from Notebook PC to SL55 from the PCs infra-red port, rite?
(ie. no data cable)

Should be fine.

got the Infra-red working.
Works better if jus transfer straight from the icon next to the clock (rather than straight from the Bitmat editor)

So how do people find the sl55 now? I'm thinking of getting one.
Is the menu navigating still slow. No firmware updates to correct the problem?
It's a shame no bluetooth cause would of had me sold 100%. Menu colour isnt much of an issue as long as I can see it. I'm not playing games on it or looking at it constantly all day like a pc or notebook.
Also lookin atthe Samsung 410. Anyone like the sl55 over the 410?

i think it is a great little phone. it is causing me some problems with my current phone upgrade though. its very hard to find one that is better! ;) even a smart phone!
ok, i know they are better on paper, but for my real-world use, the sl is hard to beat.
the d410 does look interesting though. its a slider after all :)
im v interested in the d710, but not sure i can wait for it to appear

Yeh it seems as if it is a good phone the sl55.
I was actually looking at some cebit stuff. The e800 and e810 which are both sliders. Both look reasonable as well.
Do you have any link on the d710?

on the slowness thing (forgot to comment last time):
it isnt slow when navigating the menus, but does occasionaly hang for a few seconds when actioning something. the 2 bad points about it are:
1. it sometimes misses a key press when texting. this a problem on all 55 series siemens phones. i think i have narrowed it down to when you need to select two letters that use the same key (eg: d and e etc).
2. you have to enter the date/time for the organiser reminders as a number of days/hours or minutes. it would be much better if you could just enter teh exact date and time for the alarm i reckon
sorry, i dont have a link for the d710. have a look at the allaboutsymbian forums
