Hi All,

I was wondering if there are 3g subscribers here in this forum. I want to hear feedbacks regarding 3G services in the Philippines. I would love to upgrade to 3G but before jumping in I wanna hear how's the internet connection using 3G. I'm gonna use the phone as a modem for my laptop.

Tried out Globe's 3G a few days ago, using an N70, it was nice. Although the picture wasn't that high-quality, it's good enough for video calling. Just yesterday - I was able to sample Smart's 3G... it was a little better than Globe's. I guess it's because Smart is instaling hsdpa(did I get that right?)... which I think is a higher speed network, than just normal 3G.

Anyway, both services are still pretty expensive for now, certainly not for the 'average joe', big businesses and corporations maybe.

EDGE is still, by far, the preferred choice of most of their subs. It's fast, cheap to use, and is convenient enought for surfing or checking mails.

*on a side note: I've tried out a 6630 with its accompanying video stand, and surprisingly, it seems faster and smoother (the picture is noticeably less choppy) than on using the N70.

cheers!

Im with Vodafone NZ .You dont need to subscribe to use 3G.

It works Ok.I was watching the news the other night the video was jittery.
Costed like $1.00NZ per video clip.Might as well go online and read the news and download the video streaming news at the new zealand news website for free.lol.

Hey, i'm a 3g subscriber from Smart. Well actually, it doesn't cost a single cent since 3G is free from Smart for now. :D quite convenient i say, instead of making oridinary phone calls i just use vid calling since its free..and the video is satisfactory...on good light conditions it looks good, low light though it's worse than a web cam on a modem connection :P When using it for browsing its not actually that fast, kinda slow but maybe its my phone rendering the images. But then again there are quite a few problems, one being i cant use the network all the time for some stupid reason it just wouldn't connect. And some of my friends are now able to watch local channels, GMA and ABS-CBN on their n70s while i get a stupid connection error or somehting whenever i attempt to watch any network.
But then again it's free, just give it a go. :)

But either way, if Smart did install HSDPA, it wouldn't matter on your N70 since it doesn't support it, so that isn't necessarily the reason that it's higher quality...

That's correct, HSDPA is a higher version of 3G, some are even calling it 3.5G.

The 6630 is smoother because I think the phone is not burdened with operating 2 cameras. And another thing is the speed, the 6630 has always been faster than an N70.

Incidentally, it's not only Smart who has hsdpa - globe has tested it's own hsdpa network during the SEA games a few months ago. (as mentioned in that wiki link above).

Is hsdpa phone-dependent? Based on that definition by wiki - I think that it's an upgrade to the network and should work with all 3G models. Maybe the reason why the 6630 was "less choppy" (as mentioned) is because it was on a vid stand and not stand alone.

I have tested myself Globe's and Smart's 3G services. Smart seems to be faster - at least in the downloading of data. As for video calling - I feel that they're the same. (I used an N70 for globe, and a 6680 for smart).

I got the 3G corporate package from GLobe and i have to say that it absolutely sucks!

I should've stayed with Smart and I absolutely regret switching networks. I saw this advertisment on TV where this girl surfs wirelessly from a cab using her laptop, so I thought maybe I'd be able to do it too.

I was wrong.

I own an N70 and the 3G wireless video seems okay, I don't really use it much anyway. The deciding factor for me in going 3G was internet capability for my laptop, but when I went to the Globe Hub on Ayala Avenue in Tower 1 of MSE to inquire about using my N70 for my laptop, it took them an hour to even try to figure out how to use it. They told me so and so that I was the first one to inquire about such an issue, but I didn't think it was a fair enough excuse to not know hot to use a service they were offering. They said that I had to buy a hardward called an HSPDA Card Reader, and when I asked them if I could get it from them, they simply told me they didn't have one yet.

Go figure...

If you were to try 3G, I'll advise you to stay with Smart.

Smart too, no issues so far here in Manila, and if you were to use your fone(ex. 6630) as PC or laptop modem, connection is uninterrupted, fast, and cost is reasonable enough (10pesos per 30 minutes).

I thought globe's 3.5g is better than smart's.
