Silver definitely!
You don't like the iPod?? Excepting the whole everyone has the iPod deal, I find the scroll wheel so effective...why would you choose a D-pad?

Scroll wheel is fantastic, I love it. Its one of the best things an mp3 player could have - simplicity in navigation.
Don't get me wrong - I like the iPod. As ubiquitous as it is, I liked it for its own appeal, beauty with a bit of brains.
I did actually intend to buy one, but the shops I went to were out of stock. They took my details to ring me if they had some....they hadn't phoned back at all.
The player I need is just for revision purposes - I want to beable to do some studying on a player that will have
Long Battery Life
Large Memory Capacity
Fantastic Sound Quality
Intuitive, Attractive Design
A mains charger.
I haven't yet found the perfect replacement for my H320 (R.I.P.)....the closest thing that's packing on aesthetics and running circles around the iother players because of it's features is Creative's Vision:M.
I want to wait for the rumoured 60gb white version (Not because it undoubtedly looks like the iPod but because I have bought white in-Ear phones that would clash with black)
But that player won't come out for a while, and I need one now is a large library of portable music. I have had certain concerns for the iPod 5th gen 30gb vid, such as its Battery, iTunes only video (unless you know how) and no mains charger included. These were often reiterated in many user reviews.
I didn't click buy on this last night since after the first post, I read about the problems with sonic stage and sony's Big Brother type attitude towards music files. E.G. Apart from having to jump through so many hoops to get the music on the player itself, if you re-install sony's software, the player will no longer recognise the computer as the original and force you to delete everything on the player so you can put music onto it.
Aaargh. I have no worries about not being able to use multiple computers to put music onto my player, Im not so fussed about not having drag and drop, but when there's a potential problem that the player will force me to delete the files I put on it because it was too stupid to realise the software was only re-installed then that made me a bit cautious.
I'm going to be doing a bit more reading now...most likely, most definately by today I would have ordered it.

I nearly did buy the iPod yesterday. Suddenly started clicking...buy..proceed to checkout.
Can anyone tell me why I should get an iPod? Apart from becoming an iPodian/iPerson
I did pick the Purple one...although checking today, its somehow not in my recent orders list *confused*...

Owning an iPod was like being at the front of the style queue regardless of cost, the UI and general feel + build was unmatched for a long time but now even Sony are catching up on the the style stakes..
End of the day the way I see it is I want a flexible device that plays most formats that I and my friends use and decent battery life...iPod used to fit but Rio knocked them off audio playback quality and now Sony etc are catching up in the style stakes..
It's just a brand which appeals to thise who feel the need to shout about how great they are, even though they are on there 4th replacment device...or the report released last year about trying to claw up the social pole by having a "niche" must have device is more important than actual functionality...

I'm liking the style of this particular sony. Its certainly eye catching.
Battery life, no one has complained about it...I got rather scared of the 2hours some people are experiencing, playing only music. Also, I don't want to turn my pc on just to charge it.
I saw a CHAV with an iPod the other day. I was like, damn it.
Apparently this player is great, (ui is like a mobile phone they say..which one is a different matter! lol) the annoying thing is getting music onto it as the software is less than helpful.
iRiver has suddenly disappeared..h120/h320 were fantastic players, way above the iPod in its days feature wise. Kinda still is.
Creative's Vision:M is meant to be around the same price/cheaper than the iPod...it is not. I'm going to wait for their 60gb version/ a white 30gb version.
How's the iPod's sound do you think? I thought it performed well, although certain sites have said its well below others. Sony (HD5) being one of the best in terms of pure sound quality
player that consistently ranked number one was the Sony NW-HD5 and was described as “crispy and warm”. Ranking second, the iAudio X5 was described as “warm and true” with the iRiver H320 right behind it in third. The Creative Touch also faired mixed reviews but was described as being “tight” and “hiss-free”. Toshiba’s Gigabeat H20 had mixed reviews saying that it is "tinny," "good for techno" (what the hell does that mean?) and "slightly processed with a hint of hiss". …and one that consistently ranked last… the Apple iPod. But hey… it looks cool ; )
i initially found this from anythingbutipods.com...whilst this may make you think, ahh theyre ipod bashers...well actually the original article is from CNET, who love apple's players.

So, this afternoon, I make the order again (since I have no word from Amazon)
I check my account and it turns up there...so I cancel the last order since I dont want two.
Strange thing is, the one I ordered yesterday is estimated to arrive 2 days later than the one I ordered just now. Both have the same postage an packaging. Stupid Amazon.

Well I really dont think the iRiver is dead, its loads better in the value for money and acessories supplied catagory. iPod feels like a rip off. They dont even give a damn charger!

Hmmm, iRiver hasn't been producing much lately though have they. The vision:m from creative - I expected that from iRiver, even something better.
I have two iPod minis and a shuffle, and I have to say that the sound quality from all three is great. I was really suprised at them. Thats not to say something else might be great as well, I haven't tried all that many portable players - I'm more a car sound guy.

Right, The player came today....(only saw it after coming home from work).
Verdict, player good, software...will make you so frustrated. Like WTF?
Sony guys were like, "Hey lets make a really good portable music player, but also for a joke, lets provide them with software that prevents them from using it!"
Idiots. I thought the people on the net comlpaining about the software were just complaining over little things and that it did work. IT DOESNT.
I intalled the CONNECT software also the SONIC STAGE 3.4 from the net. Do either work...er no. Damn player keeps saying "No songs, Connect complient software".
Even the 2 crap songs already originally on the player disappeared! WTF!
Maybe I should have just bought an iPod. At least because there's so many people who have it, there's more people to ask for help.

er..no :p
After having some sleep and thus getting destressed from yesterday's work, (just come home again now from it)
I waited to fully charge the thing like the manual said and I managed to transfer all my songs onto the player. The Connect software must have installed an update because it began working real fine. Drag and Drop my files, mp3, atrac3 or wma. Neat.
Its great! Sounds crisp and clear, menu is easy to access, lots of nifty little function like the artist link dedicated button.
Still have to test the battery...not to pleased so far but I haven't put it on full charge to be fair.
Its an eye catcher...some shiny purple pebble thing
People at work thought it was an "iPod". They classed MP3 players as small tiny lipstick sized devices, and iPods those capable of having more than 40 tracks...
I miss touch scrolling. It wasnt so bad MP3s with a phone because I had a keypad to search...
Searching with a D-Pad felt cumbersome, click click click click after you've used scroll of touch some sort.
Overall though, for a music player this is fantastic. Well recommended.
My thoughts are a bit erratic atm...

JM2C but I would never purchase a purple phone - or pink or yellow or any other color than classic silver or black. I agree with another poster who called the purple one "hideous." Or as we Italians would say it is BRUTTA! (UGLY!)

I know tell them for easy understanding that its a music player :p
When I get the Vision:m 60gb or a 30gb white I will have problems telling them what it exactly is. Multimedia device - that will take some explanation

LOL just tell them it's an everything player:p

Ah - yes, - I then leave myself open to "what is an everything player".
Sometimes i just feel its futile to explain. I find how its amusing that that's how they perceive it though.
