N70 is brilliant phone !
How different is the N71, other than the clamshell ofc... am i right in assuming it does not have the camera cover on the back?

depends if you want the phone in a clamshell and are willing to wait and pay a bit more.

well... aside from the form factor, the N71 seems to be better in that it sports an SD card. (faster data speed than mmc's right?) And for once, the pop-port is on the top (near the hinge) instead of being under the phone - a 3.5mm adaptor is used underneath. Lastly, it uses the 3rd edition series 60, unlike the N70.

Is it also true that it will have the same faster processor as the N80? Because having had the N70, I find it toooooo slow and I am not a fan of the screen which I think is just bad relative to N90 and D600.
I would say definitely get N71 over N70 (or N80....:) )

The screen is just fine, colourful and bright, its just that it's not quite up to date in resolution ("only" 176*208).

Thanks, I currently have the GX30 how does the screen compare? Just . . . . now this will prob sound really stupid I have found it very hard to find a phone that beats the quality of the display?! (old I know but I have had a great 2 years its defo a legend phone in my book!)
Also when did this phone come into the UK on contract and would you recommend it and whats your rating out of 10 (10 being the best phone on the market)
. . . or would you opt for the d600 or the w550i

I can't remember the GX30 screen all that well, though it is a fantastic screen. If you need a smartphone the N70 is good, if not definitely the D600 - a brilliant phone

im ok with the n70... somebody correct me if i am wrong but i think n71 has only 10 mb of onboard ram..
even if its a big screen that is a thumbs down in my opinion. i doubt anyone in their right mind will pitch for that kind of low mem when u have the n70 with 30 mb available!!

If Jayesh is right about the 10mb ram on the N71, then i surely am off the list.
Just sold my 6681 n got the N70 a couple of days back n the amount of free ram (34mb after a fresh boot) just makes me go weak in my knees.
Overall the N70 is easily my best
phone ever.

Does anyone know if its easy to change the N70 covers?

N70 was an extremely dissapointing phone. i dont miss getting rid of mine 2 weeks after i bought it. if i were you i'd wait for the N80 instead. im currently using the SE K750 and i love it, it'll keep me busy till i get one of the following...N80, SE W900i(white) or SE P990i :)
btw, only good thing about the N70 was it's camera quality, almost as good as K750.

marwan sir everyone's criteria of a fone is different. I am pretty happy with my n70 .. touchwood its the best symbian fone ive used till date and ive used about everyone in existence.
there are a few drawbacks but overall the positives outweigh the bad and eventually its a subjective issue
btw, only good thing about the N70 was it's camera quality, almost as good as K750.Hmm, my experience with that was a little different. The auto focus on the K750 produced much sharper images, and I was much happier with the pictures from the K750. The N70 night shots were also a big problem.

Yeah the k750 flash is awesome.. the n70 that i used also had a shutter lag..

N70 had autofocus?

Yeah the k750 flash is awesome.. the n70 that i used also had a shutter lag..
but isn't the k750 slow as well? the one I used lagged a lot - like in taking pics, for example, there's actually a few seconds between the time the camera sounds and the actual shutter movement. That's why I always warn the people im taking a pic of - to not to move after the sound, so that the pic wont be blurred.
cheers!

okay... besides the camera, is there anything else on the N70 that's noteworthy? Like how's it's smartphone capability, the card speed, the screen, any hangings or misbehaviors maybe?
cheers!

No, I just ment that the K750s auto focus help a lot compared to the N70 without.

well there is that 1 second lag that plagues practically every camera phone, so using it as a point against the K750 is not fair.
I do the same as you do, i ask people to stay still 2 seconds after hearing the shutter sounds.

smartphone capabilitiers are pretty much the same as the 6680, with extra improvements....though it's slower than the 6680.
The screen is your typical series 60 screen, nothing worth mentioning there.
my phone used to hand everytime i would type "!!!" using T9. the only way to fix was to restart the phone. pretty annying if you ask me.
other things that bothered me with the N70 were...
- when you slide the back cover, it takes like forever to start the camera.
- When sending MMS, if i set the MMS pic to large, the recipient recives it as small, when i set it to small, the recepient recieves a large picture! WTF?
- The icons on the N70 are absolutely ugly in person! yes i know this is a personal preference, but picture the N90 smooth icons, then drop the resolution 4 times, and you got the N70 icons that looks extrmely ugly....i just couldnt bare look at them after the cool 6630/6680 sharp icons. and you cannot fix that with a theme. if you get a different theme, evetything will change accept the icons...it's imposssible to change them.
- I had the 6630 which was fast, then i got the 6680 for it's front cam and more well rounded 3G phone features, instead i gave up speed infavor of the front cam which was ok with me....but then jumping to the N70 is a minor upgrade yet the phone is even slower than the 6680, when it's practically an upgraded 6680!!!
- Gallery thumbnails take forever to show up.
- keypad felt great, but the keys were too small. i have small fingers and i always had a hard time texting on the N70. i thought i would get used to it, but no such thing, 2 weeks later and im still making typos when texting because i kept hitting the wrong button because of it's size.
- Location of Green/Red buttons drove me insane, i kept hitting the softkeys to dial all the time!!!
- When sending a txt message and you exit the application quickly while it's sending, the message goes to the draft instead because the dumb phone keeps thinking you cancelled the sending. i had so many messages in the draft that i thought have been sent already. how annoying is that?
- A ran a buncha games on the N70 and they ran extremly slow, im not talking about load time, but the game had slower frame rate and wasn't as fast speed wise(scrolling/moving)
i honestly think Nokia bit my ass back with the purchase of the N70, and im hoping the N80(which i want) doesnt suffer the same fate, and gets a boost in the processor department.

yah but with the 6630 and 6680 you didn't have to wait for anything, it only proves once again that the N70 is inferior in alot of basic departments

The problem with the n70 was that the brilliant folks at nokia changed the settings.. if you press the red key instead of running the app in the background it shuts it off.. so yeah that sucks.. but apart from that all symbian phones are slow (except the 6630) ...

it isnt THAT big,.. perfect size fer me... ITs actually smaller than some sad ass flip phones ive seen..
I agree with hotzigetty, it really isn't that big. I used an N70 full time for a while, but I'm using an N90 at the moment and I'm really happy with it. The lack of vibration could be a deal breaker for some people, but other than that it is great.

Yeah when closed the N90 isn't that big...that's really all the counts for me is when it's closed cause that'll be when it's in my pocket:rolleyes:
So how do you deal with the lack of vibrate, brad?

01-15-2006, 05:43 PM
I would still buy an N90, I mean its just a technical marvel! But its just been impossible to get one reasonably priced in the UK. No network is officially carrying it thus not on high street and hence only from specialist dealers ripping people off. I'm so sad :(
carcomptoy
01-15-2006, 06:04 PM
How much can you get it?
With T-Mobile [USA] you can get it for $399.99...but only indirectly since they don't "officially" carry it either...
So how do you deal with the lack of vibrate, brad? Most of the time I am at my desk, where vibrate really isn't that necessary. The two situations where vibrate is most usefull are when you are in a really noisy place - which the N90 overcomes by having a suprisingly loud speaker for rings and alerts - and places where you need your phone on silent, like meetings - which I overcome because in these situations I usually have the phone out in front of me anyway, so I can see when anything happens on the external screen.
I can see how it would be a huge inconveniance for younger people though, for example, school students would suffer because they would have no alert during class - not that you should be using your phone during class any way ;)

Oh yes my phone is inactive during the day;)
I started thinking and I guess I could set a really really low beep to go off once for texts...low enough not to be noticed by anyone but me.
