Redistributable Server Components for Windows Mobile 5.0 - besides MSMQ and HTTPD that was available in WM2003, the download for Windows Mobile 5 contains 3 additional components, namely the PeerNet, UPnPCtrl and UPnPHost.

I ain't keen about UPnP myself, but for people who are excited, this should be a good alternative and it is available now, :)

I don't get it...I thought UPnP was a hardware thing...how does a simple software upgrade grant you that feature?

Just like router, many user thought that it is hardware too, but router is actually a software solution, the hardware router we use everyday are just software embedded in hardware.

Same goes to UPnP, it is a software solution that have been built into OSes like XP and Linux, and appliances like router and media devices, :)

I think a better way to phrase that is that upnp isn't completely a hardware solution.. As long as the hardware device/protocal can support it, you can add it.

So what exactly does the device have to have (hardware-wise) in order for UPnP to work?

To better understand the concept, think about OSes. They need to run on hardware, but we still treat them as software solution. The same goes to router and UPnP, they are pure software solutions that interact with the hardware they work on, :)

There isn't any hardware requirement for router and UPnP, that's why they are consider as software solution. Example of hardware solution are hubs and switches, as they are restricted to a specific kind of hardware.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPNP

"Media and device independence. UPnP technology can run on any medium including phone lines, power lines (PLC), Ethernet, IR (IrDA), RF (Wi-Fi, bluetooth), and FireWire. No device drivers are used; common protocols are used instead."

mmm... this is interesting.

if it's mostly software and not hardware.... and the N80 has it, then it's entirely possible that all the other symbian 9 devices out can have this too?

cheers!
