Hi! I'm wondering about this same question. I'd like to have mobile access -- actually, I'd like to have gmail access on my mobile phone. I've read that Hutch Essar is working on this. Does anyone know how I can get set up for this when I travel to north India next spring?
Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much.

habba sorry for the late post but i was away.. basically any network will work with gmail. u would be well served with hutch essar pan country network zero issues or u can alternatively go with airtel. another pan country network
i have both and gmail works fine on both across the landscape

Hi there,
My parents are currently in Goa and have had a couple of issues with using local SIMS (ie not being able to top up in certain places etc). However, as mentioned above, using your home network sim would prove to be quite costly, espesh if you plan on using GPRS to access GMail...
And on the note, gmail provides POP/IMAP access... this just has to be provisioned from the settings in your inbox.
Hope this helps.

I will be traveling in India in Jan for about 3 weeks. I will be all over:
Mumbia, Rajistan, Delhi, Cochin and Chennai. On past visits, I have had to purchase different SIM cards in the various states I have traveled. This can get costly and is bothersome. Does AIRTEL, Orange or Hutch cover all the cities/states I have mentioned so that I can get one sim card/one number when I land in Mumbai that will be good for the entire trip? Will I incur roaming charges when I travel outside of Mumbai?
Please respond.
All the best,
Michael (from New York City)

Just to nitpick :) its rajasthan..
Airtel and hutch are pan country networks. both will cover the areas u mentioned. you dont need to buy new sims per area.
Yes u will occur roaming charges for a no u get in mumbai. Roaming rates a fair bit more than local rate. My recommendation is get airtel. It is India's largest private operator and has some good deals. Also due to the new stringent security laws prevailent after the last round of blasts in mumbai, activation of the sim can take a few days sometimes. Have some contact of yours pick up your sim and have it ready by the time you come in.

or you could get a BSNL connection. Works almost everywhere. roaming is really cheap! but the call quality is sorta bad. but i guess u could live with that.!
