Microsoft warns of critical Windows flaw
Windows security flaw could allow hackers to take over PCs through malicious Web sites.
December 13, 2005: 9:04 PM EST

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday warned users of its Windows operating system of a "critical" security flaw in its software that could allow attackers to take complete control of a computer.

The world's largest software maker issued a patch to fix the problem as part of its monthly security bulletin. The problem mainly affects the Windows operating system and Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser.

Computer security experts and Microsoft urged users to download and install the patch available at www.microsoft.com/security.

Microsoft said the vulnerability exists in its Internet Explorer Web browser, which an attacker could exploit to take over a PC by running software code after luring users to malicious Web pages.

Microsoft also issued one other security warning it rated at its second-highest level of "important."

I only use I.E. when certain sites dont work in FF.

What I like about other browsers, lik FF, is that even if they have flaws, they aren't found often because most people target IE and the like! Windows' 6 new IE is supposed to be a big step up feature wise, but the only thing I really know about it is that they've finally included tabbed browsing.

The only site that I use now that doesn't work in FF is the McAfee update site.

Some buttons on eBay dont work.

Instead of sending a question to sellers it tries to open up a program!!

But Its fab and Im yet to find another browser which suits my browsing style/needs.

Instead of sending a question to sellers it tries to open up a program!!I haven't come across that before - do you mean it tries to launch something on your local PC?

No, I may have made that more dramatic than it seemed.

It opens up the "You have chosen to open "eBayISAPI.dll" which is an application. What should firefox do with this? Open with "xx.exe" Save to disk pop up window.

@Jose - eBayISAPI.dll is the Information Service Application Programming Interface (ISAPI) for eBay - basically the CGI for the backend application eBay is running. Either your Firefox install is not interpreting the content type of the file correctly (which will be text/html) or eBay is not sending it correctly (which I would doubt as you are the only person I have heared of having this problem)

Ive found out that it does send my question (since the seller sends his automated response back).

actually, if you were to notice... Firefox 1.5 is buggy too.

mine had experienced frequent slowdowns, some of the tabs not functioning, quicktime not working, hangings, and some of the history links freezing.

Im now using portable firefox instead.

cheers!

I hate that when that happens! But concerning frequently visited sites, it only does that with my best friend's xanga...

There is also a critical flaw in our social environment where people are just being jerks.

Should we blame Microsoft for that, too?

Maybe I should wait for Microsoft Personality 6.0 XP Edition before I start pointing fingers.

Damn, Im on a roll.

I think that Opera is the most stable browser, am I right?

I've only ever used Opera once, the trashcan thing was cool. I'm too used to browsing with the mouse gestures plug in I have in firefox to switch to anything else though. And I don't know, FireFox just sounds better than Opera, lol, opera sounds stuck-up........of course none of that's relevant!

Happened to me today for the first time! But a page loaded but then it asked if I wanted to save eBay.dll or whatever to disk.

I've been using Opera for a long time now and it's the greatest browser I've ever used. I also tried FF, but was too used to Opera to change; and I only use IE when some sites require me to use it.

The thing I recently discovered about Firefox is an extension that allows the use of IE within itself, which is awesome for my friend's xanga:D

Seems to be a bug in it, I have modified it so it should work, try this one - http://www.pantsland.com/ie_tab.xpi - save it to your computer then drag it into an open Firefox window.

Days after I installed it, they had me install an update...either way, it's been fine.

@MikeUK: What trashcan thing in Opera are you talking about?

MikeUK
01-17-2006, 10:45 AM
In the latest versions of Opera, top right, you will see a little trashcan, any tabs you have closed will go into the trashcan.

Erm, theres a button on the lower right of the window.

When I click that, I.E. appears!:D:D

Theres no button on the toolbar like the sample screen image (thats why i thought it didnt work), but yeah is cool! I can edit my msn groups website on FF! Woohoo! Tabed browsing doesnt work when you try to tab a link..but its ok.

Tab browsing doesn't work because IE doesn't support tabs, it actually loads an instance of IE inside the tab.

You can also right click on a page, and select 'Open in IETab'.

Ive noticed FF becomes unstable when using I.E. tab. It just sorta freezes then shuts down...I think its just spyware though that ive downloaded from somewhere...

Well, anything freezes my computer, so idk that it's necessarily the IE that's the cause of the freeze-up...

Although I suppose because it's using a program within a program is what's causing the problems...

Well it only started doing it since the install, therefore..
