Two weeks after I bought the Nokia 6111 the screen turned white. This phone has a defect where the springs that help it slide will ruin the flex cable which connects to the screen.
See http://riorio.ca/nokia for pictures.
Just thought I'd let you all know.

Maybe this is why the n80 does not have a spring mechanism.

IMHO, bit of nonsense to come here and based on one defective phone declare that there is a "defect with Nokia sliders".. lol.. Same thread on Mobile-Review.com has some pretty good discussion around this. Bottom line is that of course hundreds of thousands of phones there will be some with defects. :)

yup... that could be so true.
im hoping that this is an isolated incident... and not all sliders will have this defect.
I've seen a couple of 7650's which had survived countless drops, bang-ups, dents, water splashes, and was still working... and they all use that same flat cable inside.
cheers!

You can probably find a new flex cable and replace it quite cheaply so it's not a write-off.
The 7650 is fine because it doesn't have a spring-assisted open on the slide.

mmm... wonder what'll happen if that spring was removed? It will still slide and lock into place, right?
Just not "assisted" anymore.
cheers!

EEK! That's a bummer! Like they said, I hope it's just a singular case, instead of a trend...
Have you contacted Nokia about it? If they know of a problem, then maybe they can issue a recall once more and more people call about it...

This happens with every company when they start using a new technology, there will be some problems while they work on perfecting the technology. Have a look at what happened with apple and the new iPod nano, the early models had problems with their screens cracking, because Apple had to perfect it first. So they simply recalled the broken ipods and gave people new better one's.
@John.Malek: Take the phone back to where you got it and im sure they will happily replace it, unless the way you say your phone broke, was not really the way it broke...
If this was a widespread problem, there would be a lot more people complaining about this.

My 8800 still running sweet - got some serious battle scars but hey comes with a weight of a phone...
Always had problems with my 8850/8890 and 8910 though....helped having access to dummy handsets as the twits included a real microphone on the dummy models !! (saved £60 a time!!)
omg. let 666joe - send pics of the 8800 with serious battle scars? this i wanna see. ahahaha.
The pictures indicate something far more serious than what is described, those flex cables are quite tough, and I can't see how it could have done that. Not least it would have caused the slide to become stuck before it broke through the cable.
I would still have taken it back to Nokia. If was a manufacturing fault then would have replaced it.

The guy bought it in Asia so no warranty in Europe.

Well I am having the SAME problem.
I bought the phone and gave her as a gift. After three week of use she told me that the screen first turned white and then the phone died all together.
I haven't open the phone up yet (sent an e-mail to John and asked for instruction). I have a very strong feeling that the flex cable in my girlfriend's phone is also damaged.
I believe John's case is valid and this is a valid concern based on my case.
My 6111 is an European version - naturally it is only covered by Nokia's European warranty which I am not qualified - so how do I go about getting it recalled or repaired?

yikes, that's more bad news.
I hope that the 6270 and 6280 does not have the same flex cable problem... I wonder if this will kill the N80 as well? (since all of them are sliders).

Sorry for being really off-topic, but I can't help it...
Would you be Chen Kenichi as in the Iron Chef?:o

I've done my own stress test on the 6280 (opening and closing rapidly frequently for a minute -got bored after that - ) and its fine.
Theres no spring in it anyways for that to go wrong.
I think that faulty 6111 is just tainting the other sliders with the same scare
