Wow, this really is the handset to have. After deliberating on getting an N70 and then realising the N70 was just an advanced 6680, which in turn was a slight upgrade over the 6630 which I still have, I've decided to wait for a while. One of my contracts is up in January, other in April, last one in September and I'd really like to only have 2 max now. In the meantime I'll get a 6630 which has the fast CPU, better battery than the 6260 I'm using now and the camera is half-decent, since there are new models out you can grab a 6630 for about £100 on eBay. And let's face it, apart from the new aesthetics, the N70 isn't anything to scream about, the screen is pretty much the same deal (262K but same res.) and the camera is what I'd call a marginal upgrade.
This N80 however, it's got the same style as the 7650 which I loved and still use but in a new form factor with some amazing features. This has to be the phone I'm getting! The black one looks masses better, unlike the 6280 in black which just looks plastic. Again, all phones have a downer and with this one it's sure to be battery life what with it's BL-5B cell.

You know one thing i like to know. Nokia has had a sip api available for its fones for a while. Why cant they damn well release a sip client for the likes of n70/n80. A guy like me would use it happily

No, unfortunately you saw the new N-series on/off switch! They do look a little similar though. Still, there are Pop-port to 3.5mm converters and I still have mine from my 6230 days...

UPnP... probably another marketing gimmick... Windows has it for years, Windows CE has it for years, how many of you notice it's existence or take advantage of it?
well maybe with the advent of these devices people will now do?
anyway, time to carry a spare BL-5B battery around..i wish they'd include a sorta like stand or dock that can charge, the phone and a spare battery at the sametime.

Nice device (especially the black version) he may miss a touch screen with stylus.

I have to carry a spare BL-4C with my 6260 because that's terrible. However, my 5140 runs on a BL-5B and whilst it has a passive display as well I get about a week standby from it (no calls), so you never know. Anyway let's not get carried away, this is going to be an awesome phone.

Well, that's Window's problem...their fault for not advertising it. Besides, you have to take into consideration how many more devices not support it now than during CE's time:cool:

I love this phone.
It took some time to warm up to it (being bombarded with soo many phones, with even better specs) but this is the first one that fits 90% of my technical requirements in a respectably (small imo) sized package.
I'm a little worried about the keypad (see comments in the link of first post)...but they said similar things bout the 7610 keypad and that's just a little thing to get used to.
Nice little preview. I'm 3/4 pleased that they didnt show photos from the preproduction model. Can't wait to see what it can deliver! (im a bit skeptical there again)

Nah, it's not about advertisement or Windows, and I'm also not saying that UPnP is useless.
I think UPnP begins around 2000 or 2001, and after so many years, there are only about 100 UIC certified devices in the public devices listing, see http://www.upnp-ic.org/certification/default.asp#devices.
Unless vx2 is right, I don't see why would the technology would be a major feature in the near future. It's a gimmick because you will probably end up with a UPnP enabled phone but no devices to work with... ok, I know you will have a router with UPnP support, but what else??? :)
PS: go go carcomptoy, you are very near to top poster position, :D

I suppose you are right, UPnP is wireless tech and if home users use wireless then it is only used for computers and internet. Erm windows media tv's may be ok to use UPnP and have the phone usage as well but am struggling for uses.
p.s. Who would want a windows media tv though :D

Hopefully, then, more and more manufacturers will pick up on the UPnP trend to make the N80 more useful [than it already is]?
hehe nah I still got a long ways to go...commedacargons and Jose_R.A.M. I think are ahead;)
AGHHHHHH I can't for the life of me get the pictures to load from the N80 GSMArena page!!
UPnP is suppose to also work with printers, fax machines, washing machines, refrigerator, toilet bowl, etc. etc... either wired or wireless.... However, like JINI, both never take off as planned.
FYI, the following statement is taken from manual of a LinkSys WiFI router:-
"When using UPnP features, select Enable. As allowing this may present a risk to security, this feature is disabled by default."
Symantec presonal firewall also block it by default... let see how is Nokia going to handle the risk that no one has yet to overcome, :)

haha are you sure Q2 2006 isn't being optimistic?

It is a well known problem with UPnP, there are so many infomration on the Net, take some time to find 2 simple write out about the security problem on UPnP...
From Wikipedia - "UPnP does not have a lightweight authentication protocol, while the available security protocols are complex. As a result, many UPnP devices ship with UPnP turned off by default as a security measure."
You can also take a look at a PDF file at http://sfs.poly.edu/presentations/PaulT_upnp.pdf
I'm not expert in it, but better be safe than sorry, so I always disable UPnP on my devices, :)

I have confident in you, you can do it!

Wait, so what's the security risk of UPnP devices? Not a virus I should hope...that would be the day when your DVD player gets a virus:rolleyes:
Like bluetooth with discovery on, you announe to the whole world (can tranvel over the Internet) how to access the resources of your stuff, then everyone can try to use it... there are protection but very complex, and many devices provide insufficient or no protection...
In theory, a hacker can do anything as long as they get on your devices.
Not too sure about the latest development, but looking at how Cisco and Symantec handle it, I don't think the problem is solve to a satisfactory level, :(
Solution... also like bluetooth discovery mode, turn it off if you are not sure or don't need it.

mmm.... if UPnP takes off, what'll happen to bluetooth? Bluetooth printers and cameras are not selling as much nowadays...... will UPnP effectively kill it?
cheers!
UPnP is a discovey protocol, it is not a connection protocol, it depends on IP.
The technology that comes closest to killing Bluetooth is Wireless USB, but I think Bluetooth is working to be compatible with it, so have to wait to see the outcomes, :D
PS: I uses Bluetooth as an example for easy explaination since many of you are familiar with it, they are however not related
LOL they do
