The first Symbian smartphone from Nokia that runs under UIQ platform was approved by the FCC.

However there is no official confirmation if the device will be offered in USA or Europe, actually as we know Nokia have shown 6708 last mount in PT/Wireless and Networks Comm - China 2005 and it was announced only for Asian markets, but after it already scored the FCC approval it can be used in the US!??

New Nokia 6807 running under Symbian OS v7.0 / UIQ 2.1 platform and offer features like a 1.3 mega pixel camera with flash, SD slot, MP3 player, QVGA touch screen, and weighs-in at 5.3 ounces. At 4.6 x 2 x 0.7-inches it’s both narrower and thin.. ...

Seems a bit dated, especially compared to the P990, but I guess being that it's Nokia's first stab at UIQ, it's a big step? Maybe it's the start of things to come...perhaps a REAL SE Pxxx contender??

imo the original Benq P31 looks better than this rebranded one:cool:

I see that you guys took off the front fascia...can the P31 fascia fit on it, or is it a completely different chassis?

Isn't this a "china-only" model? Looks kinda' bland... and boring. Not to mention, big. But I think that I'll wait for the next model to come along before I get excited about nokia's venture into UIQ.

cheers!

I concur! I'm hoping at least on par with the P990, but adding 3G and WiFi:cool:

Maybe then I'll explore UIQ;)

Is it possible to enter text using keypad?

It seems dated because it is designed to be low-cost for the Chinese market. An FCC approval is in no way an indication of a US release.

Is China not an Asian country? Trust me, I doubt we will see this outside China, and maybe places like Malaysia. And it isn't on all the Asian region sites, I just randomly picked the Philippines site and there is no mention.

Great, now look at the list of Asian sites that DO NOT have it listed - Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines... Care for me to go on? The point I am trying to make is that you stated that it is listed on ALL the Nokia Asia sites, which it is not. It IS listed on emerging market Asian sites, India and Singapore, along with China, are emerging markets. Don't make sweeping statements when they are incorrect.

I do have a question.Whats the difference between Symbian UIQ and symbian 60?It isn't Symbian 60 and Symbian UIQ. Symbian is the underlying operating system, UIQ and S60 are two user interfaces that run over the top of Symbian. S60 is owned predominately by Nokia, and used mainly on Nokia devices, UIQ is developed by a Sweedish company called UIQ Technology, and is used predominately on Sony Ericsson Phones.

lol, I mean same specs though.

edit: Do you mind giving us your opinions about it if/when you do get it? I'm quite liking this, apart from size...It'll be interesting to see how far nokia will go with UIQ

I'm planning to visit Singapore next month second week. If it available on that time in Singapore I'll buy it! And now I'm searching a person who own a 6708. My main consent is the text enter using the keypad?

Nokia 6708

* General features

.....blah blah blah..

# Touchscreen, graphical, 65000 colours (TFT),
# Dimensions: 118x52x18 mm

.....blah blah blah...

* SMS
o Predictive text input Т9

I would assume that if text was only touch screen, predictive texting would be rather cumbersome to the point of being a hindrance.

If the keypad was there just for short cuts, then that's one whole waste of a keypad.

However, malinda, come to think of it, the phone's keypad has no lettering on it...just numbers.:confused: So your concerns are just.

Can anyone confirm text input via keypad on the 6708?:confused::confused:

I've searched, I only find confusing specs or get linked back to this thread!:rolleyes:

confirming: the keypad is a TOTAL waste. no t9 and no text input through the keypad. only ways are through the touchscren by handwriting or by the virtual keyboard. i can tell you this because i live in india and i have used this phone. its quite good overall except a not-so-great cam and the stupid keypad.. other than that, many of the pxxx apps n games work on this (not all) and the phone's got a neat look. i'm gonna buy it next month for approximately 370usd (16,500 rupees).
