View Full Version : SE has a tendancy to ruin perfect phones

Refering to the new upcoming w900i, I was really looking forword to 30fps recording at 320x240 not the old QCIF!!! Of course they still look extremly good at QCIF but I think they wouldn't have busted a cap if they would have enabled it to record in CIF resolution.Besides I think that that can be done from the software, after all it has a 2mpx camera, it should be able to record videos at 320x240. Second I hate the fact that it doesn't have a lens cover(this really sucks). I dont care how scrach resistant is the exposed lens that they put on now but what about dust, durt and finger marks on the lens???
A thing that has allways been mising from SE phones is the ability to watch videos on the phone other than 3gp and mp4, really sucks, I don't think it's that hard to make it able to play more video tipes, after all it is a multimedia phone!! Third I hope this phone has a better or the same quality speaker as the z1010 kuz I really hate that I can't listen to mp3s out loud on my k750(really annoing). Other than that its the perfect phone :)

Perhaps you have not realised that W900 can record at 320x240. This is however QVGA, not CIF resolution (CIF=352x288). Here is an example

number 1 ) of all phones made today. i can assure you , there is only a handful of phones with lens cover. less than 10. and half of those mentioned are made by NOKIA in its N series. the W800 , K750i and S700i also had lens covers.
i would daresay 90% of the cameraphones out there in the market , do not have such a lens cover.firstly, the lens cover adds bulk , additional cost and complexity in manufacturing. more importantly , the lens covers SERVE NO PURPOSE. its something purely a percieved difference , something which is sadly , a matter of perspective , based on opinion, based on personal tastes.
there is no concrete proof that having lens covers significantly reduces scratches and dust . figerprint marks perhaps , but are you aware that simple plastic protectors on the camera lens , like those made by martin fields easily replicate the same function at a much more minimal cost ? and , the lens found in camera phone today, tends to be hard scratch proof plastic.
this begs the question. is the lens cover really necessary ? i think not. for asthetic appeal , to lend the "camera"-phone more credibility to the camera part, perhaps.
secondly, your rant

is hardly even based on hard market data. did you know that the most popular mobile format , used for small yet acceptable quality videos used in the market today is .3gp ? Mp4 is an upcoming standard which has been embraced across the tech industry with people like apple , creative , sharp embracing it. tell me about it if sony comes up with some ARTAC 3++ media technology that completly cripples your phone. but with the whole gamut of .3gp converters and mp4 converters out there on the interweb , and you call it something which "really sucks" ? wait till you see whats ASF. the unique codec to play specially sharp encoded .ASF sound on your computer can only be found one exactly 1 link on the interweb and no other link. thats what i call inaccessible and unobtainable. would you want a phone that can play real media , divx , mpeg 1 to mpeg 3 , AAC , .mov , .CDA , before you are satisfied ?
my final word on this is , please , check your rant. if its something u really cannot stand about SE and that it is justified , based on actual correct information, by all means , go ahead and complaint.
but if you dont even understand the basics of what is 3gp and mp4 , their impact on unifying an industry fraught with super-ego companies constantly launching propertairy formats , i dont think you should be commenting on SE like this. i wouldnt call it an unfair observation rather but an observation founded on nothing concrete.
your observation about QCIF filming resolution and 30fps video recording again shows the lack of understanding that you have over the product, W900 . at this moment, it is not entirely your fault since there has been postings of this but no concrete evidence with a frame counter and the final version of the firmware on the W900 released yet. impossible to judge until the W900 commercial release firmware is released. its the same thing like the nokia N90 and the big hullalaboo about it.

Its not an anti S.E. thing, but I think lens covers offer protection from dust and scratches from places like your pocket.
I doubt there has been research into its feasibility in a phone, but I don't need to see air to know its there. Just as I dont need research to see that something with a cover, has slightly more protection than one without.
Its not essential, like you said, a matter of personal taste.
I actually thought this thread was gonna be about Nokia, since they always make the almost perfect phone. Almost, by ommiting some real important feature, or making it huge..etc.
The SMS limit..yeah...contact limit..unrepeatable calendar...hmm..is it all still like that? I havent had an S.E. phone long enough to fnd that out.

talking of gripes... my main gripe about SE is its speed! Rather the lack of it. Like the K750, for example, do you really need to see that animation in just transferring from one icon to the other? Why cant they just make it as snappy as the nokias, for example. Browsing the phonebook, the pictures, and some other menus in an SE is very slow.
good thing that they're improving the RF performance of their phones (today's models are very far from the RF of that pathetic T68 and T610 I used to own). Also notable is their improvement of their displays, battery life, form factor, and camera.... but if they're improving all of that, why cant they just bump up the processor a little and make their phones faster? Sigh.
cheers!

Damn I think that was a lil harsh. Kinda sounded like 1 wuld hav to be a real genius to post on here unless u hav reason to think he was just being biased against SE!!!

I think you have summed up how much of a 'genius' you need to be with that almost incomprehensible 'text speak'

i think wat the original poster meant, is the same as wat i am complaining, .3gp is good, compresses videos into small file sizes, easy to transfer over mms or even video streaming. The thing is, that is when our phones had built in memories ranging from 10mb to 30mb+ nowadays almost all mid to high end phones had memory slot, expandable memory; they should really consider adding other format for video playback/recording support. Maybe microsoft doesnt wanna license it, but if not, .wmv is a good start, its good, available in the internet. .avi is good too, and mpeg. .3gp make it available for mms or streaming purposes, but recording and playback, i would really love my phone to support these two formats. :)

Why cant they just make it as snappy as the nokias, for example.
I think that is a bad example. Many Nokia S60 phones (especially newer one) are definitely not fast (not compared to K750 anyway).
When it come to K750, I would say its pretty snappy (picture galleries may take some time, but then which phone does not) and the animated menu system, well that's what make SE fun to use unlike most other brands. :)

Snappy nokia was probably in reference to s40. We all know how laggy s60 can be.

@Boasy and Dadelaus
i perfectly understand what you mean, but i think you got it misinterpreted.
its perfectly alright to come here and rant about something u like or dont like about a particular handset manufacturer or maker. however , if u rant about something u dont even understand, its something which really irks me, since its something which is completly unfounded
i'ld be frank. the way Craul frames his post his strongly anti SE. with the exception about the K750i / Z1010 speaker bit, i think most of it is actually incorrect as most of you out there know , dosent take a genius to tell you that. the nature of his post also seems very inappropriate. imagine if this thread appeared in M-R or in the Nokia sub-forum. the response would be overwhelmingly hostile since the poster isnt even clear about what he is posting.
my response was to prevent this thread from descending into bigotry and fanboy fueled arguments. remember the N90 thread ? we were all dragged into it and became preparators of something which is basically, nonsensical. the N90 thread started off the same way as this. someone who comes in with basically no actual familiarity with the subject comes in and starts shooting his / her mouth off and a big mess is created.

I was thinking of the series 40 nokias.....of course, I wouldn't compare a non-smartphone to a smartphone.
And talking of "newer ones" - the 6630 is actually quite snappy for a smartphone. It's even faster than my p910. :p

Another gripe I'd like to mention is SE's choice of software regions. Like how come EUROPEAN firmwares have a multi-character phonebook search and ASIAN firmware doesn't?
I can understand it if they changed the languages included, for example, in their region-specific phones.... but WHY would they exclude the multi-character search? Do they think that asians do not have as many contact numbers as europeans? (that's just plain stupid, if you ask me).
cheers!

hmmz .. agreed BUT , ya must note , especially if its products for the chinese market , multi character support isnt really useful since chinese names are not really organised via certain characters. its complicated. you may organise them according to the vowel pronounced but its very messy either way.
in any case , SE's different firmware thing isnt that bad since u can reflash it over using SESUS OTA / via internet on your PC right ? SESUS is the way to go. every manufacturer should have SESUS or something in that nature.

To do that you need something like DavinciTeam's flasher.

You guys didn't really understand what I had to say:
FIRST OF ALL, I AM A SE FAN!!!!
Second sorry I didnt realize those recordings were in 320x240
Third: Why is it that all digital cameras that appear have lens covers??? I;ll tell u why, because lens covers protect lens(simple and logical, isnt it?). And yes it can be a mater of perception but if u like to have u'r lens dirty from fingerprints, dust, dirt and so on it's your choice but I think that lens covers are one of the best things that happend to the mobile photography development and it doesn't take a genius to figure that out(it's simple, if you have dirty lens u take dirty pictures:) ). I dont have anything against 3gp and mp4, nothing at all but besides this formats i'd like this phone to support more so that I would be able to take full advantage of that big beautiful screen(woudn't that be nice?) and watch some movies when I get bored, when u travel and have nothing to do and so on. I made that reference at Z1010 and K750 because I use to own a Z1010 and I was extremly satified with the loud speaker because I used to play mp3s out loud and the sound was nice and loud but when compared to the k750, the k750 has very low sound volume when playing the songs on the speaker.

The lens cover might be useful to some but as said before, they are pretty tough now. The fact is, with proper digital cameras, you can see the difference fingerprints make (look at how big the objective lenses are and the resolution) and compare it to the 2-3mm opening of a mobile phone lens, it's a lot less of an issue - that and notice how much thicker the K750i/W800i was with it's lens cover, which on the K750i is loose enough that frequently slides open. I'm not saying I don't want a lens cover, I'm just saying it's not an issue.
Is this thing about 100 SMS storage really true? Even on the latest phones? I was *thinking* about getting a W550i cos I can get it cheap on a contract on O2 and it looks quite jazzy. Unfortunately, no-one (and literally no-one) has posted a review of it yet, so I don't know if it's any good. It will be SE's first dual-speaker phone. Having a decent volume through the loudspeaker would be a good buying point for me. Of course, really I want a Nokia S60 phone again - at the moment I'm quite happy with a 6260 but the camera, battery life and quiet ringtones leave a lot to be desired.

icic.. i heard SE service centres aactually allow you to flash to firmware of a different continental origin and from there its possible to update it regularly via the SESUS method ?
