Has anyone actually done any real hardware modding? Most of the posts in this forum seem to be about unlocking phones.

I tried googling once, but didnt really find any site dedicated to phone hardware level phone specifics.

Thanks in advance.

find out how viable it is to change out a 900 to 850.

"find out how viable"

I'm waiting for a w550i, that I kinda want to keep since it has chinese input. Its 9, 18, and 19 hundred triband.

I have a T300 right here in my hand, and its the same triband, and it's been working for me the last week. (My Nokia 8600 is nearing its deathbed - screen has fallen off cracked, and buttons (the plastic) are broken)
I'm here at work (single story small dental type office in a backroom, like one of the rooms with the crazy torture chairs u sit in while the dentists does his job, just no chair) and have made two calls today, which both went through fine, and were actually really loud (because of the speaker?).

The T300 does only show two of the five bars though, so I believe/assume its working at 1900. So i dunno really if i would need to switch out 900 for 850, but i'd like to know if i can.

EDIT: now theres a k750i on its way too. I'll see which one I like more.

??

... are we talking garage project or university EE lab room ?

I dont know much about EE, but have wanted to learn more about it for at least a year now (thanks to working on a gba game, so wanted to know more about gba hardware).

I came across a chinese website
http://www.it.com.cn/mobile/disassembly/index_2.html
that shows, well, the disassembly of several models (k750 and s700 are familiar), and so, I am curious.

(My parents are from Taiwan, so I do spreak and read some chinese, albeit traditional, but I could struggle through simplified. That explains why I want to keep the chinese input on the w550i)

How can you change the GSM radio to be 850/1800/1900 instead of 900/1800/1900??

You take for example; the band chip from a Nokia 6230 and put it into a Nokia 6230b.

Well, yeah, compatible models, but what about models that don't have "B" variations or w/e? Is there still some way to change it?

Can be done.. most of the parts in phones r same lik cars..
I was discussing with my frnd yesterday abt band moddin he said it can b done..

and dere was a guy in his worksop trying to fix an amp to his 6600 to boost sound..
den i was askin him questions wat he is actyally tryin to do and how?
is it compatible and stuffs..

then he said 6230 uses da same loudspeaker as 6600..

dat guy has 2 loud speakers in his 6600
1 his original 6600 spkr
other samsungs x600's ;)

so comaptibility wont b an issue unless it has some special chip on it :D:D:D

are there any resources on the internet that discuss phone modding in depth? (Not many people have responded with hardware specific details)

Other question: has anyone ever tried this before?

Well, I realize some hardware between phone models are compatible, but whe about software issues? Won't the phone get all confused?

Nope, not if the chips are the same (as in size).

got my w550i (2 weeks after I paid for it), looks like reception isnt terribly bad, with the external antenna, but I'll be testing how 1900 works here. We'll see

hehe.. guess wat.. today i went to ma frnds reapir centre and converted 120 1100s
all were 1100b yea its 850/1900
we converted to 900/1800
its simple.. dismantle da fone remove da band filters.. insert new 900/1800 filters and juz flash it..
i didnt do any hardware changes...
i was flashin da fones.. and its ma first time..
ahem. actually we didnt fix a new band chip.. ma frnd worked out a trick..
and specially for SE
he said in some fones no need to do any hardware changes.. u can convert it usin a software called Flex.. i cant really remember da name.. anyways i hav a video of todays conversion.. if any1 wants i will post it..

zeem, I would definitely like to take a look at the video.

My w550i has full bars here at home, but has only 2 at work. Both single story rooms, both have trees, but there are power lines at work. Would that be it?

Or it could just be that that's a low reception area...

That's pretty cool, zeem35...switching bands and all:D

:D yup.. its intrestin too..
but i dont lik da place where all r done.. cuz its such a huge mess.. tons of cables all over da place...:o
the funniest thing is repairing fones is lik eatin toffees 2 ma frnd..
ma fones keypad light was down.. i thot it will cost me several thousand bucks..
but ma frnd did it for free..
i guess da cost for him was only few rupees lik USD 1 or 2
but they charge USD 10 o 20..
its all in the game..:)

zeem, perhaps you could use megaupload.com or putfile.com. Both are free webspace upload services that will host a file for a period of time.

cctoy, that makes sense. even when I walk out and around, the reception doesnt seem to get much better.

edit: remembered the other one as well, yousendit.com

new dilemna:

decided I'm gonna keep the k750i over the w550i. Big problem now is (here at work) my reception has almost completely died. on the w550i, i constantly had 2 bars here at my desk. with the k, i have either 1 or none, or no reception at all. I would absolutely attribute it to the external antenna, but my t300 (or was it 30) had pretty good reception at this same point.

my eventual question is, how possible is it to switch my k750i operating bands? I guess i do need that 850.

http://www.it.com.cn/f/mobile/055/27/119839.htm is the page with the k750 disassembly. half the work is done for me?
