Hey guys.. confused between 2 phnones.. the simple, practical, perfectly featured, and more affordable Nokia 6230i or the slick, excellent, stylish, and popular K750i?? I had my mind set on 6230i as i never cared for anything other than nokia.. as this is the most widely supported (and IMO the most userfriendly) phone around here (Philippines).. but then i got tempted to look at the little gem called SE k750i.. so...
anyway i know there's been lots of debate between the two.. i aint here to start another one..(feel free to start one though heeh).. im here to ask for user experiences.. and make my own well informed decision
If you guys would please, please feel free answer all or any of the following, SPECIALLY (or AT LEAST) the last question please:
1) I've heard that scrolling the addressbook in k750i is kinda stoopid for it's class...like it doesnt support multple characters when searching for an entry... if you have lots of entries that starts with "N" you to press "N" and press down many times.
2) I've heard some people complaining about it's joystick breaking easily.
3) i've heard some people complain about lesser signal in places where other phones have full reception.. (weak antenna?)
4) I've heard people complain re disappointingly low volume.
5) How easy is it to change housings like on nokia phones? will that void any warranty as well?
6) How flimsy is the camera cover? I like to squeeze my phone in my tight jeans as with my nokia phones.. the SEk750i worries me as it has some "moving" parts like the lense cover, flimsy memory card cover, and not to mention the joystick that some claim breaks easy
7) How different is the LI-Po battery of this phone compared to common batteries on nokia? (Li-ion)? Coz i know for a fact that on my nokia phones, 1)i need not overcharge the battery during first use, 2) I need not worry about DISCHARGING the battery completely before recharging it (memory effects).
8) Have you ever dropped your phone yet? how was it after that?
9) What are your complaints against your k750i?
any inputs are much appreciated.. :)
thanks guys

3) i've heard some people complain about lesser signal in places where other phones have full reception.. (weak antenna?)
Signal is not as good as nokia, but IMO its one of the best compared to other Sonyericssons.
4) I've heard people complain re disappointingly low volume.
Yes, the volume is pretty low, you can just barely hear it when its on medium volume. the good thing about that is that the sound doesnt loose much quality on maximum volume, but the bad thing is that you cannot have it too loud.
5) How easy is it to change housings like on nokia phones? will that void any warranty as well?
if i remember correctly you will have to unscrew the housing off, i think that might void the warranty.
6) How flimsy is the camera cover? I like to squeeze my phone in my tight jeans as with my nokia phones.. the SEk750i worries me as it has some "moving" parts like the lense cover, flimsy memory card cover, and not to mention the joystick that some claim breaks easy
The k750i i had had a pretty solid casing and a firm camera cover. phone feels like one piece (the w800 feels even stronger.
i dont know if it was just me, but for some reason i felt that the w800 was very slightly faster than the k750i. when in the gallery the w800 hardly ever lagged but the k750i did lag a little bit (i couldnt really compare since i didnt have both at the same time).

welcome to the mobileburn forums.

If the 750 you're gettin has european software - then yes it will have a mutli-character phonebook search. But if you're getting an asian software k750 - then no, it doesn't have a multi-character phonebook search.
2) I've heard some people complaining about it's joystick breaking easily.
not really. At least with mine, it didn't break at all, got stuck a few times but that's about it.
3) i've heard some people complain about lesser signal in places where other phones have full reception.. (weak antenna?)
most SE's have weaker RF performance than most nokias - that's always been a fact. But the RF of the k750 is adequate enough.
4) I've heard people complain re disappointingly low volume.
sad but true. Newer firmware updates are said to have fixed this... but I cant confirm it.
5) How easy is it to change housings like on nokia phones? will that void any warranty as well?
umm... if you're getting a phone from one of the telcos, then yes, opening it up will most likely void the warranty. (so does unlocking). So better just get a unit from another store - which is already openlined (unocked). And nope - it aint easy to change the housing. The k750 was not designed to have changeable housings like the nokias.
6) How flimsy is the camera cover? I like to squeeze my phone in my tight jeans as with my nokia phones.. the SEk750i worries me as it has some "moving" parts like the lense cover, flimsy memory card cover, and not to mention the joystick that some claim breaks easy
the cover "creaks" irritatingly, but good thing that it doesn't come off. The mem card cover is okay. The joystick, like I said, gets stuck once in a while - but I've never had a chance to break it off entirely.
7) How different is the LI-Po battery of this phone compared to common batteries on nokia? (Li-ion)? Coz i know for a fact that on my nokia phones, 1)i need not overcharge the battery during first use, 2) I need not worry about DISCHARGING the battery completely before recharging it (memory effects).
nope, you need not worry about memory effect on the 750, for it doesn't use a nickel-cadmium batt. Overcharging is not a worry too. I did notice that my 750 doesn't last as long as my other phones though - I found its battery life to be below average.
8) Have you ever dropped your phone yet? how was it after that?
nope never dropped it yet.
9) What are your complaints against your k750i?
any inputs are much appreciated.. :)
thanks guys

my reason for selling my k750 was a lot of things. Poor video rate, laggy responses, slow browsing, low volume, non-repeating calendar, no multi-char search, the fast-port getting loose, creaking cover, expensive parts (and servicing), and more....
my advice to you is to borrow one and try the phone out yourself first, before you buy, so you'll get a real "feel" of the phone and its performance.
(and maybe, you could ask one of the mods to transfer this thread to the SE section).
cheers!
I have used both the 6230i and K750 full time, with the K750 now my full time handset. Here is my take:
1) I've heard that scrolling the addressbook in k750i is kinda stoopid for it's class...like it doesnt support multple characters when searching for an entry... if you have lots of entries that starts with "N" you to press "N" and press down many times. As was said before, get a European version. If you get the wrong version, flash it with DavinciTeam's tool (like I did)
2) I've heard some people complaining about it's joystick breaking easily.
Its a lot tougher than in previous SE handsets, I haven't had any problem yet.
3) i've heard some people complain about lesser signal in places where other phones have full reception.. (weak antenna?)
The K750 performed the same as my 6230i around here, never a dropped call, perfect signal.
4) I've heard people complain re disappointingly low volume.
The earpiece is fine on the later firmware, though the speakerphone is a lot quieter then the 6230i. The 6230i has a much better speakerphone.
5) How easy is it to change housings like on nokia phones? will that void any warranty as well?
Quite hard to change the housing, you need a T6 Torx driver and a bit of confidence.
6) How flimsy is the camera cover? I like to squeeze my phone in my tight jeans as with my nokia phones.. the SEk750i worries me as it has some "moving" parts like the lense cover, flimsy memory card cover, and not to mention the joystick that some claim breaks easy
The camera cover is great, I can't even pull it off when I'm trying. The memory card cover is very solid, and attached to the phone quite well.
I posted a thread about battery memory effects, search for it. My K750 and 6230i are about the same for battery life.
8) Have you ever dropped your phone yet? how was it after that?
Yes, I have dropped it onto tiles, it is still quite happy and not even a ding. I have done the same with the 6230i, with the same results.
9) What are your complaints against your k750i?
The speakerphone is really my only complaint. The UI is great, camera is great etc... But if you use the speakerphone a lot, the 6230i is for you (as long as you don't mind the smaller screen and worse UI).

hmm... thanks so far..
@brad
As was said before, get a European version. If you get the wrong version, flash it with DavinciTeam's tool (like I did)
thanks for telling! :) i thought i'd be stuck with a phonebook like that if i got a 750i.. whew.. and i assume this is free and does not void warrranties?
few additional things:
A) what's the difference between k750 an k750i?? im confused..
B) im probably gona get an asian version of the hardware too.. china made.. as 97% of all phones here are made in china...
with that said, could i expect a difference performance? perhaps china version are FASTER?! :D or does SE have good quality control regardless of where they are made? - meaning all are the same..

Just get the K750. 6230i wasn't worth buying anymore.

A) what's the difference between k750 an k750i?? im confused..
they basically the same.. different regions get different versions. "i" for international i guess.. c for china!?
but they are the same phone with maybe a slightly different firmware to go with the region regulations
Hi there,
can i just ask if the camera cover does come loose at all?
Also is it possible to switch back cover on he k750 for the w800 or even the
D750?
i ask because if i was ever to change the cover i do prefer the w800/d750 camera cover.
thanks very much.:)
and i assume this is free and does not void warrranties? It does cost, there is a guy on the forums that sells the credits for $5USD or something, then you just download the program and connect your phone. If the repair center does pick up in the fact that you have flashed it, it does void your warranty, but most wouldn't
could i expect a difference performance? perhaps china version are FASTER?!Nope, but the games will be in Chinese.
The K750i is the international version, which will come with either European or US firmware, both have multiple character phonebook searching. The K750c is specifically for China, and does not have multi-character searching. That is bacically the only difference.
Also is it possible to switch back cover on he k750 for the w800 or even the
D750?You have to open up the phone and change the cover with one from one of the other models (can be found on eBay pretty easy). You need a T6 torx driver and a little confidence, but it isn't hard. This will void your warranty though.

Hey,
Okay I will start of with saying it's the D750 from the UK that I have but will answer the questions to the best of my ability :)
1) I've heard that scrolling the addressbook in k750i is kinda stoopid for it's class...like it doesnt support multple characters when searching for an entry... if you have lots of entries that starts with "N" you to press "N" and press down many times.
Supports multiple characters fine.
2) I've heard some people complaining about it's joystick breaking easily.
Never had a problem with the joystick.
3) i've heard some people complain about lesser signal in places where other phones have full reception.. (weak antenna?)
Not had a problem with the signal that I didn't get with my Nokia 6600.
4) I've heard people complain re disappointingly low volume.
Aye volume isn't the highest but it's certainly loud enough if you turn it up high.
5) How easy is it to change housings like on nokia phones? will that void any warranty as well?
Not sure about this one.
6) How flimsy is the camera cover? I like to squeeze my phone in my tight jeans as with my nokia phones.. the SEk750i worries me as it has some "moving" parts like the lense cover, flimsy memory card cover, and not to mention the joystick that some claim breaks easy
I thought the K750 camera cover was abit flimsy myself and prefer the cover on the D750/W800
I have been using the SE dock for the phone and had no problems with battery life, infact I would say the battery life is very good. This is my first SE phone but I like the way you can see the battery power in a % rather than the terrible little bars
8) Have you ever dropped your phone yet? how was it after that?
Heh yeah im bad for this i have dropped my phone twice on concrete and came our with a few scratches but no hardware problems.
9) What are your complaints against your k750i?
The screen isn't indented so I would highly recommend you get a screen protector for it. With the exception of that it's the best phone i have had.
A) what's the difference between k750 an k750i?? im confused.
As far as I know the letters at the end just specify region and possible the fireware but there is no hardware differences.
B) im probably gona get an asian version of the hardware too.. china made.. as 97% of all phones here are made in china.
As previous question the only difference would be the firmware which you can flash to what you like anyway

thank you all for your advises.. i've decided to take the plunge..
go my SE K750i and it's nice.. :)
my first impressions where it looks quite SLICK :) I love it..
got a bit of a learning curve to go through but so far i feel home with it..
things i didnt like right out are:
1) the camera, while it's cool, i feel restricted to not be able to use any other buttons to take a picture but the shutter button on the side.. i'd like to take pictures in the usual PHONE cam manner, which is vertical wise, but the phone doesnt seem to have any other cam trigger but on the side, which is rather difficult to operate vertically.
2) a few hours from when i started using my phone, i got the first LOCK UP.. and there was nothing i could do but remove the battery.. really frustrating for a little boy who's just begun to enjoy his new toy.. :(
for now that's it..
as with the shutter sound question here.. yep.. on mine i can turn it off using silent mode..
anyway.. got some issues that would like your comments on.. perhaps a new thread is more approriate:
