one more thing, it wouldn't make W800 buyers looked stupid, first off: both were of very different form factors, size. secondly, one's a 3G, third, one comes with 512mb, the other comes with built in 470mb. Good one.
shaheen
10-17-2005, 06:16 AM
oh yeah, theres no news whether this phone ccomes with a bigger memory card like the w800... so the w800 actually has more memory out of the box than the w900.. the differences are basically, 3g, remote, bigger screen and different form factor

While SE pressrelease says Q4 2005, Per Alksten at SE (product responsible) says before christmas 2005 in an interview in magazine Mobil (www.mobil.se).
Magazine Mobil has already tried it out.
http://mobil.mkf.se/ArticlePages/200510/17/20051017164610_MOB312/20051017164610_MOB312.dbp.asp
To summarise the content of the short review above:
- Video conferencing works well although the sound was not the best (through external speaker I guess).
- Possibility to take snapshots of the one you are video conferencing with.
- WEB browsing of normal WEB pagest works very well.
- New e-mail client (not tested).
- Possibility to upgrade phone software over air (like GPRS/UMTS) through the phone menu system.
- Kalendern och adsress book same as in previous modells.
- Synchronisation software and USB cable should be provided in the box.
- Camera works as in K750/W800 and is very good.
- Better video recording capabilities (quality wise) although not tested that well in this review.
- WEB TV works great thanks to full screen mode (works equally well with movie trailers etc. as well).
- Remote control is very simple and does not provide much info on the display. Its mainly there to control the media player and provide a radio (part of the remote control).
- Great video gaming processor
- Music player looks the same as the one in W800.
- MS not provided in the box.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson on Monday unveiled a new third generation technology mobile phone handset which includes a digital music player and a camera.
The joint venture between Japan's Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and Sweden's Ericsson (ERICb.ST: Quote, Profile, Research) is the world's fifth-largest handset maker. It focuses on more expensive models and has about a 6.2 percent share of the market.
The new 3G Walkman phone, which has a 2-megapixel camera and allows users to download and browse video games and graphics, will be available at the end of the year.
The latest model is the fourth Sony Ericsson Walkman phone. Sony Ericsson's W800 Walkman phone was the first phone to use Sony's revived Walkman brand, first launched in 1979.
The joint venture has been unable to meet demand in Europe for some of its latest models, such as the Walkman phone, because of popular demand, analysts said last month.

after the S700 design, you would think that SE would come up with a sexy design like the S700. W900 look so ugly. and this whole walkman BS is seriously getting no my nerve!!!
i dont see why would anyone get this hidiouse looking phone if you have a K750. the W900 is nice, but not work buying the phone for.
shaheen
10-18-2005, 02:45 AM
why is the walkman thing bull****? its actually a very smart marketing strategy, theyre taking over the portable music section now as well as camera, its the convergence era now. everything in one device and i sold my h320 cause i use my w800 now as a sole mp3 player. i dont need 2 and trust me, the w800 matches up to it in terms of sound quality and 512mb is plenty to get me through a day.

my point is, the W800 and K750 do the same thing as far as MP3 playback goes. one is labeled walkman, and the other is not, theyre the same phone with a different shells(and an offline mode), my old nokia 6680 has the same playback quality...should i be calling it a walkman 6680?
cameras in phone were an evolution, MP3 plaback is not!
just like you said, it's a smart marketing strategy, which makes your average dumb and clueless joe buy into it.....very sad!
From memory, the W800 has different capabilities for handling playlists as well compared to the K750.
shaheen
10-18-2005, 04:40 AM
w800 and k750 are not the same music playbak wise, ive owned them both
plus the fact of the matter is w800 was sold as a music device , thus the hpm70 and 512mb card. the k750 didnt have niether

10-18-2005, 05:23 AM
this route of evolution for SE's is a promising one. Remember that an article from some industry analyst stating that iPODs will never be beaten by mp3 players nor walkmans. But the only thing that will tumble iPOD's phenominal success, is the introduction of mp3 capable (really really capable ones dat is) cellphones could. It's the gadget of 2006 i guess. And by 2007, no one will be buying mp3 players, jukeboxs will die and those that could juggle with cellphones are maybe 20-100gb 5" screen media jukeboxes. cellphones killed the mp3 player star! :)

yeah, by next year 470mb internal memory would be a joke. we'd be looking at 6-10gb flash memory easy. the nano started the large size flash memory mp3 player, the cell phone will finish it

yup, I think they call it "brand recognition"? Sony has that advantage for it enjoyed more than 10 years of success with its "walkman" line of cassette players... so it's natural that they'll use that as a marketing gimmick. Same with nokia using the name 'carl zeiss' in its N90, and Motorola using the name "i-tunes" for its new phone.
manufacturers nowadays are so full of gimmicks... everyone has one. Yup, and it seems to working, a friend of mine actually thinks that w800 is "the first phone to play mp3's and can turn-off the phone and stand alone as an mp3 player", solely because it has a walkman tag on it, hehehe... :D
cheers!

problem is , with the 4gb and 6gb flash drives under samsung production, ya think they would release it to a strong competitor to samsung sales ?
in a way korean companies are very similar to the big japanese zaibatsus. both are especially paranoid about producing technology and releasing it to non-affliated firms. that explains why samsung's 5 mpx cmos and 7 mpx cmos lens modules are still hardly seen anywhere else other than samsung products.
hmmz, i doubt output would come online as fast as that , apple's ipod nano singled handedly swiped out the 4gb flash drives that samsung had. the cost involved in producing relatively small batches of 4gb flash drives and the demand factors likely in a 4gb flash phone, hmm , might end up with rising costs .
my bet is they wont come into phones till at least , earliest 2007. for it to be massively adopted it has to be produced cheaply while in great enough volume. same way SD cards didnt really get accepted as until recently(recent 1 - 1.5 years) , might take some time for the entire industry to adapt and adopt it as a standard.
still , 470mb is massive , i think its sonyE's way of thumbing off to competitors like the D600 ( 80 mb of storage + a relatively expensive microSD/transflash slot with up to a maximum of 512 mb capacity cards) vs. (470mb of storage + up to 1gb MS duo pro avaliability)

samsung, is not the only producer for large capacity flash based memory modules.
and in respond to ur doubt, yes, samsung will sell them. you can't sell all the world's mobile phone urself, even if other phones had only memory slots and urs had 4gb. it still takes hell lot of other elements for phones to sell, hence samsung will, sell their modules to other competitors in order to sustain profits.

DEViANT
10-18-2005, 08:47 AM
Missing WiFi is only really an issue for smartphones of which this isn't one so I don't think it's a big loss and really, it's a shame it's not, given it's form factor.

dont think so
got quite a couple of intervening factors.
if i m not mistaken , other major players e.g toshiba , hitachi , seagate , maxtor in the memory area , played the wrong card by hoping that 1inch HDD or 1.5inch HDD would be the future growth market. they got punked with pretty low demand.
other major flash producers , hynix for example , are nowhere close to releasing a similar 4Gb, 6Gb memory modules. so if you wanna put it that way , samsung pretty much has a monopoly . and , bulk of its memory is actually RDram , DDR ram producing stuff which , they retail to PC components or smaller flash modules like the stuff found in the shuffle and other flash based MP3 players.
so pretty much samsung has a monopoly on the 4gb and 6gb flash memory modules. even apple had to armtwist samsung into releasing it for the nano because there were limited supplies. if i m not mistaken , there is a report out in the web that says apple bought up almost all of samsung's current 4gb inventory just to ensure sufficient stocks for the 2gb/4gb flash module in the ipod nano.

defintely .. my acer laptop has components from intel to Zonelabs stuff in it..
but. the key thing is , they wont release technology immediatly and its selective. thier core business needs still ovveride the need to make sales, anyway lets not go out of point , i just think samsung is seriouslly unlikely to sell the 2mpx , 3mpx and 5 mpx cmos module it makes and mass manufactures , most of it is sold to other companies but none have appeared in the handphone industry as what we know off..
hmmz back to w900.
i seriouslly hope the 470mb internal memory isnt a typo or some mistake.like i mean , oops we meant 47 mb memory , 470mb internal memory is something reallllly spectacular , it employs samsung's own tactic of having large memory space plus , relatively cheap (in comparison with microSD or miniSD) for MS duo pro 1Gb.
to the success of any media phone there must be three key categories
1) content versatality / support of multiple media
2) solid memory size / expanadable memory
3) decent battery life.
appears that the W800, K750i and W900 are pointed towards that direction

It's a good thing that Sony finally came around to supporting mp3 natively. There was a time when they kept pushing for their aac standard of audio - but it wasn't well received - so it didn't take off.

the design was stunningly great, features are same basic function that we see on S.E phones. But for Nokia phones, its symbian wares are great for download more applications to met your daily needs: lifeBLOG, microsoft applications, blacklist , smart-answer software anyone????), compared for other non-symbian phones life is just boring (just pure music).
S.E phones are great for music, camera functions, the design is fawless but again lacking of applications thats where the S.,E phones failed from this battle.
So Nokia, Moto are still the best phones in some aspects coz of its java and easy to find software.... symbian that and symbian this.... hehehe:D

you dont seem to be aware that SE phones do feature java ( in fact its nearly a standard on almost everyphone nowadays).
plus , a good 60% of nokia's model range is non-symbian. other than nokia and SE with the P800/900 and 910 and 990 , panasonic's X800 / X700 , there has been virtually very very very low take up rates for symbian by other manufacturers.
granted the ability to download symbian applications from the web into your phone is an additional plus for consumers , the question that needs to be addressed is how many people actually know how to do that ? again , other than the serious tecchie or business road warrior , i seriouslly doubt your general public finds symbian useful.take for example the nokia 6600 , how many average joe's realise it is a symbian phone and its ability to download symbian apps to allow it to bypass the 10 sec video recording limitation imposed on it by nokia ?
the k750i / W800 / W900 are designed to be high end multimedia phone. not smartphones. its completly unfair to compare them in terms of function and the provisions made by the manufacturer for its functions. same debate like the N90 and K750i. compare the camera . yes . compare phone fuctions , they are two different kettle of fish altogether.
lets keep the focus on W900 and not degenerate into fanboy-fueled squabbles about nokia and SE all over again
its slated for release in 4Q this year. christmas presents anyone ? :D

N91 is a smart phone, hence users can purchase, say Skype; so that they can do VOIP, other than that, users can purchase Agile Messenger, then get themselves connected to the MSN, Yahoo or AOL messengers. W900 however, had no actual purposefull use of WiFi, and by the way, i bet telcos dont like WIFI, telcos will prefer users to download thru their 3g portals.
