The P990 is the next in a line of successful Sony Ericsson smartphones - the P800, P900 and P910 – and is based on the same proven concept and recognisable form factor. All have been popular with users, operators and software developers thanks to their powerful productivity features. Operator feedback and download statistics from the Sony Ericsson Application Shop have shown that consumers, both business and personal, are interested in using their smartphones to the fullest potential. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) can be as high as 4 to 5 times that of more traditional voice-centric mobiles.
To ensure a large proportion of applications are available on the new Symbian and UIQ software platform when the P990 goes on sale, Sony Ericsson has decided to announce the smartphone well in advance of availability so that developers have time to create and certify as many applications as possible.
“The technical prowess of the P990 will be brought to full life by applications from the third party developer community,” said Jan Wäreby, Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing. “Demand for applications on the P800, P900 and P910 has been very high. Our smartphones have been recognised as the most advanced and useful on the market, and we want to maintain this reputation with the P990 by ensuring there’s a rich supply of top applications for enterprise, productivity, leisure and gaming when users make their first visit to the Sony Ericsson Application Shop.”
As with its predecessors, the P990 is designed to be first and foremost a great mobile phone. It also offers all the benefits of UMTS including video calling, high-bandwidth multi-media downloads and the ability to browse the Internet with full HTML pages. These are viewed in landscape on the new Opera 8 browser. In addition, the P990 is prepared for all major push e-mail clients enabling full e-mail access with attachments, anywhere, anytime.
The P990 has multiple text input methods enabling it to support all users’ needs and preferences. Writing e-mails is made easier by the new hardware keyboard positioned beneath the flip-down keypad on the main body of the phone. Reading them is made simpler on the large 2.8 inch QVGA touch screen. Multi tasking – being able to browse the Internet, send and receive files at the same time as talking – is now possible due to the enhanced capabilities of the new software platform.
Memory has been extended in order to handle all multi-media downloads and e-mail attachments. Memory Stick PRO Duo up to 4GB will be available in the market at launch and the P990 now has up to 80 MB user free memory. A 64 MB Memory Stick PRO Duo is included in the box preloaded with a VPN client and trial version of a virus scan package.
The combination of UMTS and WLAN features will also significantly improve the efficiency and flexibility of applications such as e-mail, browsing the Internet/Intranet and video telephony. WLAN, available in hot spots all over the world, acts as a complement to high speed 3G services, enabling widespread access to corporate network services.
Other new features include automatic time zone change to the Calendar diary and updated PC sync software with extended synchronization possibilities. Additionally the 2 Megapixel camera with autofocus, digital zoom, photo light plus the bright TFT screen and video recording provide a high quality imaging experience.
In a separate announcement today, Sony Ericsson Developer World and UIQ Technology outlined their plans to support UIQ 3 developers.
Developers can program in C++ or Java™ to create powerful professional and personal productivity tools for the P990. The smartphone is based on Java Platform 3 (JP-3). It supports four new Java Specification Requests (JSR’s) including Web Services (JSR-172) and is the twentieth phone from Sony Ericsson supporting Mobile Java™ 3D, demonstrating the company’s leadership in this new technology. Standard Java™ applications can be run with either the flip-down keypad open or closed.
The P990 will be commercially available in Q1 2006. The variants will be:
* P990i Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa
* P990c Dual mode UMTS (2100MHz) - GPRS 900/1800/1900 for Mainland China. Launch for mainland China dependant on availability of 3G services.
* The P990 will be available in 4 hardware keyboard variants: QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY and Russian
The P990 will be demonstrated in booth # 124 at The Smartphone Show 2005 in the ExCeL Centre in London on October 11-12, where Sony Ericsson is headline sponsor. Rikko Sakaguchi, Senior Vice President and Head of Product & Application Planning, gives a keynote presentation.

aiks..... why didn't they retain the family look of the p-series established in p900!?!? it looked.... well new and modern, its somehow ugly IMO. anywa, specs real promising and good!
hmm.... the 208 processor rumoured earlier, still the same one? cos with the new interface and graphics requirement of uiq 3.0; i did see the minor increment of processing speed taking its toll there, when the guy opened the flip and close it, the lag is unacceptable, in P910, its almost instant.

lag you say? yeah, that IS unnacceptable - I hope SE fixes that. I just hate slow phones.

Well, when P900/P910 arrived people thought they were ugly as well as was the case with T610, K700 etc. But when they saw them in person, people changed their mind. So get used to it. All SE phones look much better in reality than on pictures.
The price for P990 will be around 649 USD (~525 EUR).

Anyways, is this the all amazing hermione then (the was p950)
Well if it is the p990 hurray! I like the name better.
The only thing i have quarms with is the permanent keypad but apparently thats a blessing.
I like the fact that the 2.8inch screen is the whole view finder for the 2.0mp camera with autofocus (no macro?).
What is the audio port of this? The S.E. one is it?

So the big difference, if I'm correct, is the support of UMTS, Wifi, 2mp cam, increased memory, better screen, new OS, and the support for blackberry push e-mail.
Well, I have to say that I don't love the design but the specs sound great. :D However, it did get slightly smaller but still retains its thickness, which was always my problem with the p910 the thickness. Also, I really never understood the wifi function. It's not really useable as it's still quite slow on a mobile and the screen doesn't fit onto one page. If you tried to fit on one page the letters are too small to read. The only use really is to download e-mail and that's if you can find a hot spot. I had the 9500 and found it to be not very useful and really never used it. I can understand if you have wifi on the 7710 or 770 cause of the screen size.
Regardless, I'll probably get it when it comes out:p

AIYA  !!!
Well there we go straight from S.E themselves.
@Brad, wouldnt 2.2inch have been extremely small for touch screen?
ANYWAYS
What is the video recording capability of this? Any specs with that?
Oh jeez, I'm really embarrased. I had 2.8" written on my notes, right in front of me, yet I put 2.2" in on THREE different occasions... I'm really having a blonde/lack of sleep moment here...
YES, the P990 screen is 2.8" 262k color QVGA, as stated on my snapshot on MB.
(no, I'm not actually blonde).
Arne Anka

Other sources claim 2.76" for P990 (sometimes SEs own figures are not correct either). Anyway, somewhere between 2.76" and 2.8" it is i.e. not much difference from P910 then.

mmm... isn't it true that there are a lot of FREE hotspots there in the US? Starbucks offers them free, right? At least they did for a time when I was there.
Downloading emails and attachments are, I think, best left for laptops and notebooks. But WiFi would be nice to have still - if you wanna download music, ringtones, small pictures and other "smaller" data.
cheers!

UMTS is the name of a 3G standard of which WCDMA is part of.
Usually when people say UMTS they mean WCDMA.
- secondly, what does that "e-gsm" stand for?
It stands for Extended GSM and is same as GSM, but uses a slightly different frequencies to extend the GSM network capacity. All modern phones supports it and should not be mixed up with EDGE.

work with wcdma networks being tested worldwide???? it will work with any of the 63 deployed wcdma networks across asia and europe ....
3/vodafone in europe various networks in hk etc... there are quite a few wcdma networks now.
its an excellent fone ... i didnt expect any less than se.. however lack of edge is a serious handicap for me... edge is very good on my current network and my primary means of access for my lappie .
I am going to bypass this or wait for a proper 3g launch in my part of the world to get this fone.

Good designing??
The p910 is slightly larger than the p990
Also look how high up the screen begins on the p990 compared to the p910.
remarkable though. QVGA screen (just realised the n90 still has more pixels..but dang the screen is small) big enough for touch screen. I like it.
I will be wanting to break off the stupid keypad if possible.

Not at all. Its all about making use of available space. P990makse use of the available space much better than P910. If P910 used the space in same way as P990, the screen could have been even bigger.

Yes it has. They used it on one or two models 3 years ago or so. Back then it was inferior to T9. This new version I have no clue how good it is. We have to wait for someone to test it.

From the Swedish version of www.mobil.se. They said SE has a new price strategy to compete with Nokias N series, so P990 will be priced accordingly.
UMTS is the name of a 3G standard of which WCDMA is part of.
Usually when people say UMTS they mean WCDMA.UMTS is an implementation in Asia (mainly) of a 3G data network, it uses W-CDMA as the underlying standard for communication. Heres a timeline:
W-CDMA was developed by NTT DoCoMo as the air interface for their 3G network FOMA. Later NTT DoCoMo submitted the specification to ITU as a candidate for the international 3G standard known as IMT-2000. The ITU eventually accepted W-CDMA as part of the IMT-2000 family of 3G standards.
Later, W-CDMA was selected as the air interface for UMTS, the 3G successor to GSM.
ahh finally what ive been waiting for.

On P990 the screen is placed closer to the top than on P910 and hence making more room for the QWERTY keyboard.

I realize the more squarish shape of the P990, but that doesn't account for the keyboard...how much closer to the top is the screen then? I mean, is it enough for the keyboard??
idk all I can say is there is no way that screen is not smaller...definitely would have lost some length due to the keypad:cool:

http://img5.picsplace.to/img5/9/P950--P910.jpg
.... even we say that it's situated higher to the top of the phone, the space gained by that repositioning looks not enough to say that the screen size is the same.
take a look at the distance between the 2 red lines - which is roughly the height of the keyboard. now take a look at the distance between the two blue lines - which is roughly the height that was adjusted in the p910 to make it the same level in the p990.
Like what car said - do you still think that it's enough to fit in a qwerty keypad?

yeah, thought about that too.... in any case, if the picture of the p990 is smaller in that photo (looks smaller than real-life, doesn't it?), and the actual is a bit bigger - then distances (between the red lines) would be bigger too.
meaning that it makes little difference - the proportion is just the same, the screen is still a 1/3 or maybe 1/4 shorter than the p910.
(I meant height not width)

bummer..... The space from the QuickShare logo to the end of the screen, indicated by the red line, plus the 4mm shorter space, indicated by the blue line, and the pushed upwards screen, indicated by the green line, makes space for the qwerty.
