We got all dressed up and went out on a hot date with Nokia's latest top of the line 8000 series fashion phone, the stainless steel clad 8800. While we had fun, there were a number of issues hidden underneath that beautiful exterior.

Great review.

Still I've lost the interest in the high end fashion nokia's.

The price makes it very exclusive so they limiting their own market share with this type of phone, whereas other manufacturers like motorola with the Razr V3 are gaining big on the high end phone market because of good phone prices.

haha! I completely agree with that review.

It can be seen to be 8800 bashing but since in my experience its all true..

It kinda says it all for me ! Don't waste your money...Worth and Value are very subjective things. If you factor them into a review, you complicate things.

While most of us would agree that $1000 is a lot of money, Bill Gates and Brad Pitt would probably disagree - as would many others.

Most of us would probably consider $100 to be very little money, but a large chunk of the world makes less than that in a month.

That's why I tend to review the phone, not the marketing decisions that lead to its price. And besides that, prices almost always drop over time.

agreed. but wat if:

it had a 2.0MP camera. water resistant. 88MB of memory (to suit its 8800 thingy) and the icons were different from normal S40 (too cheekily designed, for me) and that it came with a dark blue/white theme (somewhat like vertu's interface) and change the fonts to a more classy, upmarket one. and lastly, ryuichi ringtones?? think Vertu's !
now that otta made it real CLASSy.

ooh, ur being v creative today comme! lots of new design specs ur postin!

If it had all those, the price might be understandable, but knowing them theyd probably up it.

I agree with Michael about reviews mixing worth and value, it kinda complicates matters. However it is understandable to an extent cos wouldn't you think it was necessary since many people who would read reviews would be consumers right? So its important that they would know what is worth spending their money on? And also the kinda people who will find that information will probably have near enough funding or ideas about the value of money as the author of the review .

But like michael said it would over complicate things...as i have just seen during the typing of this post...Handsets will all depreciate in value and so should not be a defining factor in a review, only the specifications and performance at the time compared with other models at that time.

Worth and Value are very subjective things.

And besides that, prices almost always drop over time.

Michael I disagree - the Nokia 8910i (the last real premium handset) held it's price for over a year and still commands a high cost. The 8850 and 8810 before that also held price but did drop slightly towards the end of it's life..

Take the V3 which has been mass market flooded removing all exclusivity and in my opinion desirable-ness is now availiable new boxed at around £150 in any UK phone store... Nokia have and always will play it right in this market keeping up the must have factor by deflecting those whose cannot afford or justify or want a phone of that cost...

Why by that sports kit for £3k for your car, that £500 suit, the extra large TFT screen ? because they make you stand out from the norm - love it or hate it we are all guilty in one way or another our vice just happens to be gadgets...

wtf?!?! with that price, in Malaysia, it's even more expensive than K750? more expensive than W800? and around the same price as P910??

currently in m'sia, a 8910 sells around 60gbp.

OOOOH! (one of those oohs when someone tells a joke so lame!) haha!

question, which do you think has a better "slide" mechanism, (better as in, looks cooler) the 8910i or the 8800?

3gpeasy
09-23-2005, 01:37 PM
I always thought the 8910i slide mechanism didn't look to great at all, just kinda cumbersome and fairly pointless. When i worked at Dial-a-Phone one of the lads had one, and he thought it was the bees knees but i couldn't quite see it myself. I was happy with my t610 and the £200 or so i'd saved.

The 8850, though, was a different matter. By far the coolest phone at the time; still cool now really. I soooo wanted one of them at the time. Bit like i want an N91 now, but for different reasons.

Jose_R.A.M

8850, damn right the coolest phone of its time! I really wanted one too, all my dad's rich chinese tennis mates had them, and I was like wow!

I kinda like the 8910is slide better than the 8800 for some reason. I didnt get it at first but i think its dead cool. *click* (immitates sound)

never been an enormous fan of slide-cover phones to be honest (8850 excluded - it's too cool to overlook) partly because i had a 7110 when they came out and, while i thought it looked v. cool, it was a bit awkward to operate with a big flappy plastic thing getting in the way. I bought an old 8110 not so long ago and while i could imagine how incredibly cool that would have been at the time, it just seemed like a daft design in retrospect.

once the "wow i've got a new toy and it was well expensive" effect has worn off, phones are just left with features and usability; that's why i like nk702's better than 8110s and 3210's better than 7110's. Ultimately, supposed coolness aside, they're better phones.

Jose_R.A.M
09-23-2005, 03:21 PM
its not just about the mechanism its how its implimented. the 7110 (and 8110) was an example of what not to do when it comes to slide covers. the biggest plus thing was the improvement of the menu over the 3210, also the scroll wheel. If i was not going on aesthetics id go 7110 over 3210 any day.

3gpeasy
09-25-2005, 06:55 PM
to be honest the menu did make quite a difference, and i really don't know why they got rid of the scroll wheel so soon. I had a J70 aswell and was well into the scroll-n-click thing. But ergonomically the 3210 was a lot better. to be honest, never really used an 8910i much so can't really comment on the slider mechanism there. just know that it was a pain on all the ones i used.

Jose_R.A.M

They probably got rid of the scroll wheel because the phone didnt sell well. They probably didnt want to replicate anything from that fone incase the same cursed feature made future phones unappealing. They probably didnt realise that it was the monstrous design created with the abstract art of wiping tissue on your behind.

I liked it. I like the 7650's better. Why they stopped doing that too, there I dont know.

No, vBulletin does not include a synonym search. I suggest using Google and appending 'site:forums.mobileburn.com' (sans quotes) to your search string.
