2.5G GPRS High Speed Wireless Data

T-Mobile offers a variety of integrated voice and GPRS Wi-Fi data capable devices, allowing customers to remotely access the Internet; get their corporate and personal e-mail; keep contacts and calendar information updated on the go; and get popular games, news and information services such as sports scores, stock quotes, horoscopes and games delivered automatically or on demand to their wireless handset or device. By the end of September 2005, T-Mobile plans to launch EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) service across its nationwide network, offering average data speeds between 100-130 kbps – up to three times faster than traditional wired dial-up services.

EDGE Launch Imminent On T-Mobile

T-Mobile USA has updated a page on their website revealing details about their EDGE network. T-Mobile now claims they will launch EDGE data network-wide by the end of September. EDGE, often referred to as 2.5G, is a GPRS-based data network that is up to 4 times faster than original GPRS. The carrier began selling EDGE-capable handsets earlier this year, and confirmed they expected to upgrade their networks by 2006. T-Mobile is also rolling out additional network-wide upgrades, including the use of handsets' built in voicemail notification icons instead of the text message they used to send.

FINALLY!!! Now I just need to get an EDGE phone...

I decided not to report on this since there was no formal announcement, just a change to a normally static page in the About section. It could have been changed months ago for all we know.

In any event, it seems pretty obvious to me that EDGE is already running in a lot of markets that T-Mobile is in, so I think there is a good chance for a formal launch this month.

Just curious as to what they will do in terms of cost. Right now I have the $20/mo unlimited GPRS plan.

TMobile also just made an announcement (via email to me, anyway) about their network of hotspots totaling 25,000 with all their partners. YOu can roam now, and if you use one of their partners it averges out to be about $00.18 (cents) an hour. (or was that perminute?) haha. well anyway - looks like tomobile is here to stay - thank goodness.

According to DT, they are definitely here to stay (http://www.cellular-news.com/story/14080.php). With their new 850Mhz roaming agreements (http://65.254.44.186/showthread.php?t=732342), their coverage is also looking as good as any other carrier.

Wow that 850 coverage map looks AWESOME! I guess it's time to finally accept 850...:o

Definitely glad T-Mobile USA is here to stay...I would have hated not having an internationally connected GSM carrier!

....for native coverage, you're right, but with the new roaming agreements (and an 850MHz phone) that might not be the case any longer.

Just curious as to what they will do in terms of cost. Right now I have the $20/mo unlimited GPRS plan.

It Looks like they've upped it to $50 (http://www.t-mobile.com/plans/default.asp?tab=internet).

I did find (via Google) another page (http://www.t-mobile.com/tmobile_internet/rates.asp) on t-mobile.com that lists two other unlimited plans: the $20/mo GPRS add-on plan for your existing phone contract, and a $30/mo standalone plan. But I haven't discovered a way to get to that page through t-mobile's portal, so my guess is that the latter page, which makes no mention of EDGE, is obsolete, and that there is only one plan ($50).
