Phone Unlocking

Sometimes, when you buy a new phone there is a slight chance that your Network Provider (Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile, Globe, Smart, Verizon etc) have locked the handset only to accept their SIM card.

What does this mean?

E.g. if you have a “locked Vodafone handset” the only SIM that will work are those Vodafone. If you try inserting an Orange/O2 (any other non Vodafone) your phone will register an error message to notify that they are incompatible.

How do I check if my phone is unlocked?

First find out what NETWORK that phone is on, e.g. O2, then insert a SIM which is not of that network, e.g. Orange.

You may find the following messages if you have a LOCKED handset:

Nokia = "Enter restriction code" or "SIM card rejected"
Motorola = "Enter special code"
Ericsson = "Enter Correct SIM"
Sony Ericsson = "Incorrect SIM"
Samsung = "Invalid Network SIM...Enter Code"
Panasonic = "Invalid SIM"
Siemens = "Phone disabled! NETWORK LOCK"
Sharp = "Invalid Network SIM"

Note that certain SIMS are phone dependent and will not work on certain phones anyway.

Why would I want to unlock my phone?

If:

1. You want to use another network on the same phone,

2. You have more than one SIM that are of different Networks,

3. You want to sell your handset to a wider audience and at a higher price

4. You are travelling abroad and you want to use the local SIM for more value for money.

How do I unlock my phone?

1. It all depends on the type of phone you have.

2. If you are lucky all you need is a special code that is unique to your phone’s IMEI (serial number). This code can either be bought, from places like THIS ONE (http://www.thetravelinsider.info/roadwarriorcontent/nokiaunlocking.htm)

3. Or you can go HERE (http://www.trycktill.com/unlock_swe.asp) and unlock it for free.

Please note that some manufacturers will not be listed, and some phones, you just cannot unlock.

5. You can also contact your Network Provider and ask them to unlock your phone. Some will charge you a range of prices, expect the price to be around £15-30.

Your phone will either be sent an unlocking signal, or you will be provided with a code that is unique to your phone’s IMEI. This you will have to “plug” into the phone yourself. Some networks may require you to complete a certain time period if you have just bought your phone, e.g. a year before you can unlock.

6. Certain phone shops have an unlocking service. The ones I have seen in the UK charge approvimately £7.00 for this service.

7. You can buy special equipment (e.g. data cables) and software to unlock your phone. Sometimes you will need a cable and software. In other types of phones (some models of Motorola Sony Ericsson and Siemens), where the unlock code is firmware dependent, this is the ONLY WAY TO UNLOCK it

Is unlocking my phone ILLEGAL?

No, but as long as it is your own phone. If you have a locked stolen phone/black listed/reported “lost” it is now illegal (in the UK) to unlock it.

So, my phone is unlocked but it still says the old network name?!
This LOGO is called the SPLASH SCREEN and it has been programmed into your phone by the company that sold it to you. It does not mean anything about your new Network.

Unlocking only removes electronic restriction so you can use other SIMS other than your original Network’s.

You can remove the splash screen without having to unlock your phone, but that’s another story.:D

Great post. I found that very useful. I will plan to call Cingular to see if they will unlock my MotoT720 that I bought under AT&T. Had it for 2 year+, ut renewed my contract 1 year ago and have 1 year left. I want to have it unlocked for a one week Trip to Canada in October.

Easiest way to have your phone unblocked is to visit your local shopping mall. There will be loads of barrows selling phone covers etc. They normally all unlock phones for about £5.00

Technically, Verizon phones are already unlocked...unbranded I think is the better term...

But anyways, I would think so. I wouldn't understand why not...

As I see that unlock requests are not permitted, I want to be clear that I am requesting recommendations on places to visit in London. :)

My issue - I bought my husband a Moto A840 (new) for Christmas, because he was taking a trip to the UK for a few months. When he got there, bought a "pay as you go" SIM (so he could call me for 10 cents a minute), and inserted the card, the phone asked for a Subsidy code. Hence, we were introduced to the world of locked phones. We don't like living here!

First, we figured out what the message meant, which was pretty easy. Then, he paid a company (UnlockTelecom.co.uk) online to provide an unlock code. Their code didn't work.

So, I called Verizon here. They told me that they would not provide the code until the end of the contract. Because we feel that our contract with Verizon was to agree to deal with them for two years and no other terms were explicit, we find this totally unreasonable. We're both students, and if I had realized all this crap I would not have bought him this "nice, fancy" phone for Christmas. He could have just bought a cheap-o GSM phone while there. Live and learn.

So, now it has become a matter of principle more than anything. We want the phone UNLOCKED, dammit. I am now with him in Cambridge, UK, and am going to London in a few days. (No one in Cambridge can seem to unlock the phone).

Now the point of the post:

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place that I can visit to have the phone set free for me? Remember, it is a Motorola A840. I am entirely willing to pay (I am paying for the $70 round trip ticket to London!) for assistance. I want this taken care of, done nicely, and done quickly.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

This is not a request for someone to unlock my phone. This is a request for recommendations regarding a place that I can go to have the same done for me.

The story: I bought my husband a Motorola A840 for Christmas (new, from Verizon in the US). We are now in Cambridge, UK, and didn't bring our Verizon SIM with us. We'd been told that one could buy a SIM here and call the US for $0.10 per minute. Sure enough, I bought a pay as you go SIM and that is the rate to call our family back in the US. The problem is that the phone, of course, requires a Subsidy Code for us to use the card.

The first thing we tried was to purchase an unlock code from a website (UnlockTelecom.co.uk). The code we received didn't work.

The next thing we tried was to email my mother-in-law, have her call Verizon, and have them relay to us the required number. They told her that they would not provide the number, which is really irratating. I am going home soon, and my husband is staying. We want to be able to use the phone to have him call me!

So, now, it's sort of a matter of principle. We want this phone unlocked and I am on the hunt for a place that will really get it done right. I am happy to pay for a good job. Heck, I am buying a train ticket round trip from Cambridge to London to do this, which isn't cheap, so you can guess that I am determined.

So, now the question:

Do any of you who have endured many "unlock my phone help" requests know of a place that can for sure unlock a Motorola A840 from Verizon? I would love recommendations!

Thanks!

@travelingvasil - I happened to stumble across your post. You seem quite determined to unlock this Motorola. If you provide me with your IMEI via PM I'll have you an unlock code in the next 24 hours for free.

This is a one time only deal, please no one else PM me ;)

I also bought a code from unlocktelecom.co.uk and they never sent me my unlock code, they didn't reply to the 4 emails I sent them either :mad: I don't recommend this company.

As I see that unlock requests are not permitted, I want to be clear that I am requesting recommendations on places to visit in London. :)
