Nokia Comes From Behind To Take 3G Lead
Yesterday, 2:29 AM source: Strategy Analytics / TechWeb
A recent marketshare study from Strategy Analytics shows Nokia now leads in 3G handset sales. The company produced 17% of the 3G handsets sold. This is only half of Nokia's share of all markets, which is about 33%. However, the 3G market is still young - it is small and highly splintered. The most remarkable part about Nokia's lead, though it is still small, is that it came from just one handset. Nokia's first 3G handset, the 7600, was a total flop. Until about 2 months ago, Nokia's only other 3G handset was the 6630 smartphone, a relatively small Series 60 smartphone. Nokia now offers the 6680, a successor to the 6630 as well, the N90 imaging phone.

COOL. I thought it woulda been the 6630 because I keep seeing it EEEVEERYWHEERE!
The 7600 only became popular where I am many many months after its release...in the beginning no one had it...then they all had it. Its understandable why it was a flop though...unusual linear keypad layout and wierd over all phone design.
Hopefully this shouldnt make nokia's head grow too big and make them continue to want to bring out innovative design and technology to the phone world.
I would hardly call the 7600 a flop based on your own opinions of it. It was Carphone Warehouses best selling phone for a long time, frequently outselling. I'm not sure on the exact figures sold but I know it will be a lot

That statement makes absolutely no sense to me. Lol. Of course the lead came from the combination of sales of all their 3G models.

7600 was essentially a pilot model and they never even expected it to sell a lot. I mean there were hardly any 3G around at that time.. lol. And it was not their first 3G model anyway, 6650 was (I think that was the model number).

The 7600 is one of the phones I've always wanted but couldn't get cause obviously it won't work in America...the 7200 is another one. It's a shame that Nokia used to do that more often...thankfully most phones are triband now or at least have "b" version:laughing:

that is cool..........but unfortunately here in India we STILL DONT HAVE 3g and the news says that they plan on moving straight to 4g and skip the 3g in india.....they say its not economically viable to have 3g in india.

Yup, that's about right, I think. I recall the 6650 being sold only for a few weeks - and it didnt sell all that well. What nokia did was they took the menu, put it in a new and very unconventional housing - and called it the 7600. I had a chance to test one - the keypad was quite difficult to get used to. Even more difficult than my SX-1.
cheers!
