View Full Version : Network Names!
Argh! Why can't the UK have cool sounding network names?
America has network names like Verizon (when I was in America I connected to Verizon to use my phone to call home and was particularly impressed with the macho sounding 'Welcome to Verizon whisper) amongst other things, although to balance it they do have A T & T, not the best for a cool sounding name.
Even Sweeden has Hello MTV (I'm getting that from another post in the Panasonic section, I've probably misunderstood) which sounds cool.
So America has Verizon, Sweeden has MTV (even if its not music television) and what do we have? Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and O2.
None of them are pretty cool sounding and while I guess Virgin is more of an improvement, it's not by much.
But wait - there's a new player in the mobile market! Maybe this will have a cool name! What is it?
Tesco Mobile.
Says it all, really.
VENT!!!!

haha.. maybe marks&spencer mobile while ur @ it... actually i think the words vodaphone, o2 etc etc are pretty cool! i mean in singapore we have singtel, m1, and starhub... talk abt boring
Well Australia have Optus, Telstra, Vodafone, Orange, and 3.
Out of those only "3" actually sounds alright. The others are just generic corporate names.
Actually, I think 02 sounds pretty cool, but that's just me.

Isn't it wierd that "cell" has connotations of an enclosed space, yet it's used in a whole load of mobile companies?
O2 used to be Cellnet - cell and net! Two bad words for a network, huh!

Here in Iceland we have Síminn and Og Vodafone.
Síminn is an old word for cable or a string, but today it basically means "Telephone".

Maybe it is an indication of what their network is made of?

Yes. Originally, in 1906 when the company was originally founded, the network was built up with lines.
And we are very protective towards our language and foreign words don't get accepted into the language too easily.

really?! oh that must suck (but the name would look pretty good on a phone)... where do u live btw?
After seeing some of the names on this thread, I guess that O2 isn't too bad. It's not as cool as Verizon but not as bad as BT Cellnet or Next Hell...DoCoMo is quite good but I've got no idea what it stands for.
Let's change the idea of the thread - what would your ideal network name be?
I think Freedom Telecom would sound alright, maybe shortened to Freecom - that'd be a nice name. The quality of the service and cusotmer care would probably suck if I ran it though, I'd be more interested in the looks...! :-)
Hmm...Jalu-Phone...?

I think everyone will think that their own country's networks sound the worst. After being bombarded by boring advertising and what not, who wouldn't. And furthermore i dont think anyone will think their network's name is cool sitting on their phone all the time, why does everyone use logos?!?! Cos they hate seeing thier network on their phone!
On another note, i think O2 sounds pretty good, meaning oxygen and all, but cos its short, anything that's short looks good on a phone, like cell info locations that are short look cool, such as 2 and 3 letter ones! There's not too many around though.

dokomo is japanese for "everywhere"
Do Co Mo is the mobile division of NTT (Nippon Telephone and Telegraph), which is basically japan's telecom monopoly.

in belgium we've got Proximus (Latin for getting closer), mobistar (not that difficult to explain i guess) and a something-operator called BASE.don't get the meaning for that name but hey they do the craziest stuff 'round here
I've always been a bit confused by the network "movistar". I can understand mobistar or moviestar, but why movistar? Is it a Spanish way of spelling moviestar or does it have a different meaning?
I suppose O2 is a pretty nifty name - apparently we've had really strong brand recognition increases recently...due at least in part to Arsenal and the English rugby side success. It's nice to be winning for a change :-)
Still. DoCoMo is a good name.

about the networks in belgium
proximus aka belgacom mobile is owned by vodaphone for about +- 40%
BASE used to be orange, but wans't doing well, so orange kicked them out and orange belgium became BASE
mobistar will remaind mobistar even after some crazy rumors that it would change to orange. mobistar has got 33.3% of the belgian market and is getting bigger and bigger every year.
some new networks joined club.
TMF mobile, JIM mobile (2 music tv hosts), carrefour, delaize (2 supermarket giants) are now availeble 2. this is possible via networkcharing. there all using the BASE network.

I happen to like the european and asian carrier names than I do the american names. I guess Verizon is pretty cool, but yeah I dunno.
I mean not all of them are cool. We have in NYC the following T-mobile, Sprint, Nextel, Cingular, AT&T and Verizon. We also have Virgin Mobile, but it's a pay as you go service that piggy-backs off of Sprints network.
I think Orange is a cool name for a carrier and O2 is pretty cool too.
I think it's funny how Verizon's advertisements look alittle like Vodafone's Marketing. Not that it should be surprising, as Vodafone owns 45 percent of Verizon...(sorry stray random thought)
And what's with operator logo's? Do you mean logo's on the display's of the phones, or on the actual phone like below the button's or something like that. Over here all we get are carrier names on the displays, and logo's on the handsets...
Here in the UAE, all we have is Etisalat, which is literally arabic for "calls" or "links"
Back in the states, the coolest name is probably Cingular...
South Africa has the WORST!!
Vodacom (my provider)
MTN
Cell C.
it just isn't cutting it. at least Vodacom offers good coverage, GPRS and now in a month or two EDGE!!:) :)
