hmm..initial thoughts, design looks disappointing (after seeing people's concept designs)

its very samey, nothing really new (design wise)

Well I hope that I'm not judging books by their appearance, it should be WKD inside!

It should attract consumers who like tiny phones :)

But then again, this could be as big as the P910 :)

If it's the same size as a 6680 with built in keyboard and UIQ.................then this phone would be killer. The P910 was really a good size for the features, but the 6680 is better in terms of size.

i don't get why they wanna keep the design so boxy..

its sony... the curviest model they have is either the z200 or the S700i .

most SE are happily chic square.

...has S.E. eeever made a wierd design for a phone? All i remember are boxy boring phones..

Unless you want SE to make triangular or circular phones, I'd say stick with the boxy style :p

I guess SE is just trying to stick with "if it ain't broke don't fix it" formula. In my opinion, SE are more "Asian" influenced in design. European designs IMHO are more sleak, but Asian designs are more business like and more functional. It's like Japanese Cars vs. Euro cars if you will or a Lexus vs. a Mercedes. I don't mind the box as long as they make it slightly lighter and smaller in term of dimensions.

I dont want S.E. to make triangular phones...something cool....t68ish...or even anything near the new concept designs.

They were boxy in shape too but somehow were much less bland than this design.

yeah, thats it. its not so much that the phone is boxy in shape, its just the design is bland.

I read in the local newspaper that world market share of Sony Ericsson dropped from 6.5% to 6.2% :( (not sure if the percentage but I know it's still above 6%)

The market share dropped, yes, but they sold more phones. ;)

they had better keep with their boxy design.... which is still the trend when it comes to mobile phones. Nokia had shifted alot from their wacky weirdo designs to boxy likes after the success of T610.... no one noticed? now the whole market are full of T610 wannabes..... E398 .... XphoneII ... anyway... it doesnt look good... but addresses many of the problems we all complained:

1. change back to the trusty keypad of P900
2. replacing (maybe) the jog or to compliment it with the addition of 5-way navi key and traditional SE softkeys. *This might suggest the using of traditional SE-matrix interface (like that of K750.. K700.) on top of the UIQ platform. Which renders it to fully perform all phone functions in flip closed mode, and to only explode itself with functionalities of UIQ when flip opens. (drooling...... :D)

Like I realised before you posted this, halfway through the thread,

Its not so much the boxy shape, its just the design is just bland.

Anyone can make a cuboidal phone...its the graphix, little ridges, etc. that make it more desirable and appealing to the eye.

Are the official specifications out yet?

(P910 is: 5.8 x 11.5 x 2.6 cm)

Screen:
Type: TFT LCD, touchscreen (source)
Dimensions: 4.5 x 6.0 cm
(P910 is: 4.2 x 6.4 cm)
Resolution: 240 x 320 pixels (QVGA), 262 K colours

Network:
UMTS
Tri-band GSM (GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900)
GPRS
Wi-Fi (not confirmed)

Camera:
Front camera for videophone (probably)
Back camera with 2 MegaPixels resolution (1632 x 1224 pixels), CCD (probably)

Flip open, touchscreen plus a qwerty keyboard in the body of the phone, similar to the P910 keyboard but with larger keys.
The jog-dial is smaller than the P910's.

So the screen now is Wider than it was before? (ratio is different, 1:0.75, p910 1:0.66

One thing I am looking forward to is the S.E. 2mp camera. Hasnt been disappointing in any model yet (even though there arent that many and theyre all kinda the same)

actually i thought it was the rumoured 3.2MP cam,...... nevertheless.... i guess they're holding that back for the S800.... :)

WELL the p900 was once roumered to have mp cam...lol.

S800, successor to s700? Some funky ali g colours going on there.

i guess so..... definitely 3G .... maybe those ali ginkies..... are for the prototypes? ... they better make it as classy as the S700..... to me it doesnt looked any good.. S700 is still the sexiest phone ii must say... especially viewed from the back.. reminiscent to some magnificent beings on earth... hint hint** :D

Jose_R.A.M

lolol!!

...S700 was/is a great phone, dead classy (although a little chunky)...

The bright yellow looks cool, but also makes it look cheap.

UGH that bright yellow is disgusting...looks like a toy! (reminiscent of this: http://nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/DisplayPhones?id4=left_nav;phones)

In any case, I think SE should at least try to make it smaller...honestly, it's HUGE!

commedecargons
08-28-2005, 06:12 PM
it better be huge... wats all the 384kbps for if the screen is some 2.2" 176x208 res?? huge screens for huge connection speeds and huge incoming data... :)

those are some sexy specs indeed commerdecargons!

i can't wait to see what the P950 is gonna look like. i just might get me one. is it going to run on the same P910 UI? or will be an upgraded one?

i always thought the screen with all the applications on the P900/910 looked very cluttered and unorginized. they need to turn them into icons like like symbian series 60 and have the feature to create folder and subfolders to play applications in them.

i'm glad they'll include a 5 way direction button instead of the AWEFULL JOG DIAL!!!!

commedecargons
08-28-2005, 11:51 PM
ha! i however hoped they'll implement both the jog-dial and the 5-way navi key. Imagine taking of the keypad, without a jog, what would u use to navigate around? by the way, the hermione will be using UIQ 3.0, it seems quite promising as you can browse here http://www.uiq.com/uiq3.0userinterfaceimages and see that Hermione most probably will be guided by these designs of UIQ 3.0.
I cant stop drooling.
