Is Nokia planning or are there rumours (I suppose it doesn't have to be Nokia) of a new tough phone which supports 3G services or USIMs? I ask because my main contracts are 3G USIM based and I need a tough phone (or at least ruggedised - I have a 5140) for use in the field.
If you have anything let me know, I'd be interested. Thanks, guys.

Find it unlikely that a ruggesised 3G phone would come out any time soon, as 3G is barely covering the dry and warm buildings of the cities.. 3G won't reach the backland quite yet. :)

I don't need the 3G, I need something which takes 3G sim cards. Anyway what with Three increasing their prices I might jump ship to Vodafone next year which opens up about five times more phones to me.

doesnt the phone have to have 3g capabilities in order to accept 3g sims?

I thought you could put a 3G USIM and use it on a 2.5G GSM phone, just obviously without the UMTS...

Thats the coo - phone has to switch to GSM outside coverage it'll just think it's out of coverage - forever..
Nokia should release another 6250 that was a phat phone ! gave that a whipping..
Siemens M65 is a tough old boy and not to bad looking....and yes I am GI Joe....
3's USIM cards only work in 3G phones, they won't work in 2.5G phones. Sometimes they might work in the odd phone but 3 eventually block the phone/USIM from being used on their network as it's a violation of their terms and conditions of the airtime contract

Sorry erm twatrash thats right - three lock their sims as well as handsets - Voda sims are same profile for 2g+3g so shouldn't give you any grief...
Three have employed this tactic to restrict users by preventing box breaking and selling cheap upgrades - smart move - damn annoying though since they have finally got normal sized mobiles...

thought so.
well, its as expected..getting a handset for so cheap..then a really good deal on contact. the last thing u want is ur customers using a handset u subsidised to fund the competitions sims.
annoying for users yeah, but only fair.

twatrash is right, there are a few phones that work, one of the most prolific being the 3220 which works fine with USIMs and is designed to but gets barred after about a week of use (well, 3 switch off the 2.5G coverage so only 3G signals lock). I believe the reason for this is the cost to them of 'borrowing/using' O2's 2.5G masts.

Thats funny, from people I know who have tried it, the 3220 is the one that locks the quickest (a mod on another forum I know tried putting his Three sim in his 3220 and it blocked in under 20 minutes).
