Does anyone know why it takes soooo long for Nokia to release their new phone models here in the US?
Every quarter I look and the Nokia website and get excited at the new phones. They get released in Europe, Asia, and even in Africa and the Middle East..but not here.
If a few of the models make it to the US market, they are old news because there is a whole new bunch of phones being released elsewhere.
Does anyone know why this is? Is it the FCC? Waiting for the phones to be EL rated??

I'm not so knowledgible (knowledgable?...nolejabul) in this subject but my guess is it's the carriers.

the big problem as already illustrated time and again is that ... america uses disparate bands .. like 850/1900 . while almost every mobile today is triband and supports 1900 the largest coverage is on 850 mhz... hence the delay

I don't think it's mainly the band disparity so much as they know America is not a huge market for cellphones...especially high-end S60 phones...
T-Mobile has no dire need for 850, which has been demonstrated with their Eurasian triband phone selection...it's more than just that...

I thought only Cingular uses 850, while Cingular and T-Mobile uses 1900, which to me would say 1900 is bigger.
I think changing this tiny chip or whatever wouldn't matter if americans were interested in the phones offered.
I bought a 7610 about a year ago because of this, and get all my phones on Ebay.

Why would you say 1900 is bigger? Cingular's the biggest company and they use both 850 & 1900...
But I definitely agree...it's not so much the bands as it is the low market possibility...I mean, most Americans only go for a simple camera flipphone and nothing else now...

i live in Canada..and once i asked the Nokia Company..why is that?
they said it depends on your provider...we show them the cellphones...and they have to buy..or w/e sumthin like this...
but it just coz providers here...are cheap asses...
thnx

It is mainly because of the power of the carriers/service providers to choose the phones they want to carry. Nokia's marketing and flexibility towards was not up to scratch for a long time but I think it's been improving lately.

One possible reason is that - most of the phones being sold in the rest of the world are either dual-band (900/1800). Like the 8850 before - for example, was out in europe and asia by the thousands, yet there was no sign of the 8890 in the US until several months later.
Another possible reason is that.... the rest of the world is not as "flip-crazy" as the americans and canadians. Therefore nokia dont see a huge market for their phones there - most of which are candybar styles. Only recently has nokia realized this mistake, that's why they're now making up for it by making and releasing flips. Last year, their ceo actually admitted this in CNN.
If a few of the models make it to the US market, they are old news because there is a whole new bunch of phones being released elsewhere.

That could also be true... the FCC does have a lot of rules. Maybe that's why it's taking such a long time - coz everything has to be complied with.
About the new phones and their bands... rumor has it is that the US carriers are trying to change the bands in the new nokias. AT&T, for example, did have a lot of problems before when they released the quad-band treo 600. Complaints that it looses signals too quickly, or that the coverage is not enough, or that the antenna is busted, etc, etc... Some carriers actually prefer a dualband phone (850/1900) only - because they're more sure about its coverage and dont have to worry about the phone "misbehaving" when it's outside of the US. Like the 6270 - I think they're planning on making a 6270b version where it only has 850/1800/1900. (anyway, those are just rumors...)
cheers!

I know... doesn't make sense doesn't it? Maybe they're trying to "americanize it" or sumthin? Dunno what the story is - like I said, its jus a rumor. (got it from a friend who works in cingular.) The opinion was that the carriers there like a triband phone, but they like a dualband (850/1900) phone even more.
Yup, I hope that nokia's quad is better than handspring's quad.
cheers!

Well finally some new phones are here now, the Nokia 8800 which pricing range is $1200+ CND, expensive because of its stainless casing, created for your ultimate pleasure, its graceful looks and seamless functions will leave a lasting impression.
N90 will be available next month (Wednesday 7th September), price: $995, expensive beacu

Hopefully next month or so the other series will be out to market. Still waiting for approval from the FCC, thats why we experiences some delays from the mobile companies... :)

Thanks for the info...
Basically I think the providers are cheap and want to limited the phones released here. I bet there are more people like you and I who are looking for the newest high end phones. I always like to keep up to date with technology and gagets.
I used to buy new phones which work here in the US from a Singapore website, but they are so expensive. (So I know the cell phone companies do make the phone for the US market) I don't want to spend that much money on phones anymore.

Why would you say 1900 is bigger? Cingular's the biggest company and they use both 850 & 1900...
Cingular is strictly 1900 MHz in CA, NV, NYC, NC, and others
Cingular is strictly 850 MHZ in MA
The rest are dual markets. Those plus T-mobile's 1900 market make 1900Mhz the leader in the US GSM domain.
