n70 has expandable memory.

It all really depends on what you are looking for in a phone.

Imaging
Music
Multitude of software (from sites like hanago.com :))

So first, tell us, what it is you are looking for in a phone.

Im assuming since you have mentioned memory, you want music capabilities. (also since you said both have the features you want, both imaging but only one symbian..so rules out the software thing..ahh..see chemistry and analytical skills paying off! hehe!:D)

From michael's review (http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Page=1&Id=1571), he says the w800i is a fantastic phone, great camera, great music player, excellent battery life, basically a more dedicated music player than the n70. So I'd recommend w800I

But thats on the assumption of music focus

The w800i sold has an orange (colour, not network) theme and should be changeable with normal themes made for w800i (even k750..not sure i dont own w800i..yet)

i have never owned a symbian phone as i have had series 40 nokias which i find quite easy to use. i have used symbian phones and found them quite slow at doing certain things like browsing photos etc and sometimes freezing!!
i have always had a nokia and am not sure wether to go for the sony ericsson as i have never owned one. help!!

Yes certain symbian phones are quite slow, considerably slow when compared with series 40.

Freezing does become annoying, often because one forgets to close applications and then when the moment comes when you need to use the camera for capturing a once in a lifetime moment the phone crashes..or even freezes.

Symbian phones are often used by many as normal phones anyway, but its features and potentials are truly used only by phone fans/techies, and you'll get used to the slwness because for us the features compensate.

Sony ericcson is a very good alternative to nokia. Even though the majority of my phones are nokia, if i was ever to switch (to a daily usage phone) I would go with Sony ericsson.

Theyre making leaps and bounds in bringing out quality intuitive technology and at times are setting benchmarks for the market.

Being a nokia User, I will find the nokia U.I. easier to use, but as with everything, you will get used to the w800i menu system.

So what is it that you are looking for in a phone? It would be easier to narrow points down then.

well a good quality camera and an mp3 player are the main things plus all the usual things. ease of use is important and a nice looking phone which is not too big and bulky. also the ability for downloading applications, games, video streaming e.t.c. pretty much just a better version of what i have now-the 6230. any thoughts??

Well, a much better version of your 6230, simply is the n70.:D whats better than a nokia, than a nokia? (joke, guys :p)

I haven't yet seen the n70 final image quality (doubt most people have) to comment, but shouldnt be much worse than the w800i. Although w800i photos do look fantastic

I prefer the look of the n70, i find the metallic bits more professional, to the non literal extent "sexy" lol. w800i seems to be a fun based phone, looks kinda like a toy imo. but thats just imo.

Ability to download applications...well with the n70 you will inevitably have a plethora of applications to choose from, from places like handago, my symbian and nokia software market, yo ucan customise your phone with better themes than what w800i can do, and you can improve video recording with apps from handago, such as eti camcorder pro ii. (no i dont work for these app sites, just mentioning them so people wont ask where to get apps from). Also Games...video streaming (can do both of the latter mentoined features on the w800i)

If you're really in it for the music, a good one to consider would be the N91, as you wouldn't even have to think about getting a bigger capacity card.

If you're in it for the photography, then definitely N90 or W800i...they're about par with each other, and if you want to experiment with S60, the N90 would be an awesome place to start, although the screen might spoil you since it's the only one with that resolution at the moment.

IMO, the N70 is a jack of all trades, master of none. I'm not saying it doesn't do its functions beautifully, just that it doesn't really have a forte other than having multiple capabilities. I would recommend it definitely as a starter S60 phone...you'd sacrifice the auto focus in the N90 & W800i, but I would think if you really take advantage of the Symbian OS then you won't really regret it.

The W800i would be a good choice definitely...music and photography in a regular phone. It's a small package, but it definitely does look like a toy if you're gonna be in a professional setting. Then again, you can opt to change the covers...I would also think you can install your own themes and stuff to get rid of the orange one...

compared to n70 unless u can leverage the various smartphone features just go for w800.

Its a great phone excellent battery life and allows u to use 3.5 mm with its attachment.

Imho its worth it.

it does everything a phone should very well and the bonus of being an mp3 player

... right, and some people actually LIKE the orange things on the outside and on the menus.

....

But a smartphone is a very useful phone to have, not only with apps, but with music too. Like symbian mp3 player apps, for example, giving you a choice to use that if you're bored with the default player. Some aps convert your mp3 into another format altogether - making them smaller (file sizes), or improving the quality of the sound. Like OGG player or UltraMp3. Then there's also the music associated with games - though the sound effects and music quality may be the same, you will definitely appreciate the bigger screen of the series 60's - when playing games.

Then of course, there's EDGE and 3G....

Anyway, just go with the phone that you feel suits your needs better... imho, it's always good to buy a phone for the many things it can do, instead of just the one thing its good at.

cheers!

Buy a K750i and reflash it with the W800 firmware. This will give you all the music capabilities. If you don't like the look of the W800 then leave the K750 covers on. If you want it to be more authentic then install W800 covers. Cheaper than buying a W800 at the moment :)

HAH! That's awesome...I wonder if my phone shop I regularly patronize has the W800i firmware already...

Also, in all fairness, there is a 3.5mm adapter for the Pop-port...AD-15 I think? If you wanna go OEM...of course, there's hundreds of them on eBay:rolleyes:

Much better to get a HS-3 modified, as you retain the ability to use it as a headset. If you use a AD-15 then it has to be removed to take/make a call.

Yeah but the whole OEM issue would pop-up...

I myself would go for the modified HS-3 headset, but you know how some people are...

Talking about music phones, why dont you consider the N91 as it is target at music lovers with the whole S60 platform at ur disposal for all the techi's.

N70: is more into business world, in fact, Nokia calls the N70 the "world's smallest multimedia computer", 2 megapixel camera (20x zoom with flash), with video calls (which W800 is lacking for this round), new version of symbian 60 (you can download lots of application from handygo or symbianware), Visual Radio FM receiver, a new photo gallery system with advanced image editing (red-eye reduction, resizing, etc.

W800: if your into music world this is the phone for you, with expandable memory, color: orange casing / housing, for the theme: it has different color theme or background...

So if you like more muisc go with W800 and for more business tools go with the N70 series...

:)
