If you are having trouble getting your USB Bluetooth adapter to connect with headsets or do other things that you expect should work, AND you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or greater, read this thread here:
The source of your problems is probably Microsoft and their own Bluetooth drivers that are installed in preference to the ones shipped with your device. You need to disable those drivers and install the ones that came with your adapter.
